In the end, he does decide to stay to make sure that no one is actually getting hurt by this. What is he going to do if someone is getting hurt? Well, he's not stupid enough to think he can singlehandedly fight a god, but maybe negotiation will work, who knows, he kind of just tries things as they come at him.
