[Today is both Tim Drakes' birthday. In honor of this, Descendant Karaoke Bar and Lounge is closed for the night for a "private event."

On the ground floor where the bar is and where there's the most open space, most of the tables and chairs have been pushed aside while some have been rearranged to accommodate the party. A taco bar is lined up on one side. Hard and soft shells are available, along with a variety of fillings people can choose to make their own tacos.

A projector screen has been set up in front of the bar, alongside a laptop loaded with a movie library.

The birthday cake is a coffee and chocolate ice cream cake with vanilla frosting. It's safely stashed in the kitchen's fridge until it's time for dessert.

Though this family is absolutely dysfunctional and its members don't all come from the same universe or timeline, they're going to make sure two family members have a good birthday party today. Jackass guilds be damned]

[Jason remembers how he stabbed his other self in the hip too. Maybe he had hit something that was already wonky?]

I'm just assuming the pit fixed up some things in exchange for others. My ribs seem to be okay on most days.

Pretty sure I was mostly patched up by the time I was thrown into the Pit anyway, but yeah.

( his free hand moves down, to--his tee, over his ribs. like he can find the breaks just by touching them. )

I've fucked up my ribs a few times since, but my body's holding out. Mostly.

Same here. The body armor and helmet help too.

[Jason takes another sip of his whiskey]

Nothing like your toys though. That shit can't be easy to get.

I've got friends in high places.

( he's working on convincing tony for more gear, already has for dick jr, but tony isn't theirs, and they aren't his responsibility. he did, however, fuck up jason. and feels vaguely responsible for keeping him from dying. it worked in jason's favor. )

You shot me in the ribs, and it still bruised 'em up pretty bad. It keeps it from penetrating skin, still hits me with the impact.

Fancy. I thought it was something like that.

[Jason smirks]

Wasn't bothering with that rubber bullets bullshit.

Even if I hadn't had on my fancy new nanotech shit, I'd've still had on body-armor.

( so that's completely reasonable. he wasn't aiming for jason's head, he knew that he'd likely be wearing something that would have kept him from getting gutted. )

I figured. Was that stuff new or you already had it for a while?

[As smart as he knows they both are, the level of knowledge needed to make that technology is more than what they have]

New. I showed up with next to no gear.

( thus, the stealing all of junior's shit. )

Hard to carry shit where I was before. There were scanners all over, you couldn't walk into a building without getting people on your ass for having a weapon.

Prison camp? Is that why you got more knives now?

[reneger]

Nah, it was more--a very tech-advanced city that had a no guns law. Or any other fun toys.

( it was very rude, really. )

The knives I had, I got away with.

[Jason takes another sip]

So you and the green nightlight, huh?

[reneger]

( why is his glass empty right when he wants it to not be. shoulders lift in a half-shrug, and jason leans back against the closest wall. )

I can't break him any worse 'cause he's already fucked.

( his voice is quiet, careful to keep it low enough to keep this just between them. clearly this is the first hurdle in a relationship: the fear of jason todd continuing to fuck up everything he touches. )

He's an ass, ( this bit is said a little louder, less like a secret and more like a quiet conversation. ) but he's capable an' he gets it.

( there's more to it. but he's not getting into that with anyone. )

[Jason doesn't miss the tonal shift his older self does. Respectfully, Jason responds back in a low voice as well]

So is this casual or...?

[He trails off but he trusts that other Jay gets what he means. It's hard to imagine himself being in a romantic relationship given how screwed up his life is. But then again, maybe that's another key difference between the Jasons]

I don't do anything casually.

( it's a broad statement, but it's meant to be. jason doesn't do half-measures, he doesn't only halfway dedicate himself to anything. he's all in, or he's all out. there's no in between. )

[Huh... The statement's absolutely true but younger Jason still finds it surprising given what they're talking about]

That bad, huh?

[reneger]

That's not what I meant.

( or it was but it wasn't all in the same breath. his glass is empty, so he reaches to snatch junior's. there's a bar, he could just refill it, but that's less fun than stealing. )

We haven't labeled anything. But I'm not gonna get into anything casually. I can't afford it, an' it's a waste of time.

( he can't afford for shit to turn south and for it to all be on his shoulders. he can't afford the weight. jason's spent years pining after people without making a move, because he knows once he's in it, that's it for him. )

[Jason glares at his older self before getting another glass of whiskey for himself. He's trying his best not to start any drama or fights today for the Tims' sakes]

Not afraid?

[reneger]

I'm not afraid of anything.

( a blatant lie, but he's following it up by--tipping his head back to down the rest of the whiskey. time to be mildly tipsy at a birthday party. )

[Jason's trying to be a little more conservative about his drinking. He still has to clean up after the party]

Makes sense. Once you've been murdered and come back to life, what else is there?

[reneger]

( two empty glasses in hand, and jason takes a step forward to find an empty flat surface to put them down on. for their own safety, really. )

I'm not gonna answer that, 'cause I'm betting it'll turn into another fight and this isn't the time for that.

[Jason snorts]

Yeah, I know. Today's not about us.

[Another sip]

Thanks for letting me know. I wasn't told shit so last year I didn't do anything for TJ.

Figured. Dick wasn't around, and Tim forgets his own birthday when he's left on his own.

( jason just doesn't celebrate his, but that's different. they've got two tims lurking around, doing nothing felt like a shit option. he's sure dick would have gotten around to it, but jason knew it was junior who had the space for it. )

Yeah, Dick said the same thing. Neither Tims seem like the type to do a party on their own.

[And Jason largely suspects it's from the Drakes' neglect, which he hates the more he hears about them]

Were you?

( the kind of person who would, because jason knows damn well he isn't. there wasn't a point when he was a kid, he didn't have anything, and whether or not his mother was going to be. . more present was always an unknown. there were the couple years with bruce, and then he was dead.

junior can't judge, but jason gets the reaction of not liking someone else finding things unimportant when they should be even if he doesn't think they are. do as he says, not as he does. )
