That's probably what it is, the researchers don't always tell him what's going on when he goes into one of those, so maybe he got shoved into a pod and his brain messed with. Like a virtual simulation or something, he knows they can do that. But if it's an experiment then they haven't given him any instructions whatsoever, so he's left to explore on his own until he figures that out.
