Who: Bruce Wayne
the_caped_crusader
What: Bruce is back in Little Love, during the aftermath of the Unaligned mission Phone Home.
When: Monday, January 17th, 2022, later afternoon
Where: Little Love, Kansas
Content Warnings: Dysphoria, possibly?
[ he was dressed as bruce wayne, not batman today, because batman didn't work in little love in the same way that he didn't work in smallville back home. it reminded him a lot of smallville, in fact, in the same ways that central city reminded him of gotham, but bad things that happened in smallville weren't the same sort of bad things that happen in gotham, and when he saw a mother post about her missing child, he somehow suspected that batman wouldn't be necessary.
he was in his late thirties now, and despite the costume, he was no longer a child... but that didn't mean he didn't know where children liked to go when they wanted to be alone. he sort of spent a number of years gathering a rather ubiquitous family that way. when he found ethan, the boy was crying alone by a small, quiet body of water not too far from where his mother, edyth, and he lived. after a little coercing that he wasn't completely untrustworthy, bruce spent a few hours talking to the boy about how he was feeling. it wasn't his best subject, but when ethan described how lonely he felt with his new abilities, how othering it felt, he sort of understood. he spoke vaguely about how he felt alone after his parents died, how he felt like somebody else after feeling like his life was pulled away from under him. it wasn't the same thing, of course, but bruce was able to empathize. he omitted the other part about the small girl who blew magic bubbles for him when he was down sulking by a river a lot like this one, but that was a story for another time.
after the young man gathered enough courage and dried his tears, bruce walked him to his front door where he was attacked with worried hugs immediately after sheepishly opening the door. bruce smiled a little to himself, wistfully, about this moment between a mother and son, but shook it off after she stopped and began praising him. after a little laughing and lightening of the mood, bruce refuses the money, despite her objections, but does accept the brownies.
so, if you're also walking through little love that same monday late afternoon, when the sun is just starting to set over a vast, skyscraperless sky, you'll find bruce peeling back the tinfoil and enjoying a freshly baked brownie. who can resist freshly baked brownies? can you???
