// generally beautifully restored historic late 1800s building in muted green and gold accents with antique furniture. pls compliment or insult him //
Content Warnings: none yet

[ The antique table has both leaves in it, extending from the dining room into the living room with twelve chairs around it. It's got a stately tablecloth and pale gold napkins. All the places are set with white china trimmed in gold, except one, which is green and gold and clearly for Loki, with a matching cup. There are name cards. There's a seating chart. The far wall of the dining room sports a buffet laden with stunning food in matching dishes, and the kitchen counter serves as a bar with a ridiculous amount of nice wine and alcohol.

The furniture in the living room has been rearranged to accommodate the table. The windows and doors are open to create a breeze and the back porch has additional seating. If people are looking for privacy, they can disappear to the basement, which is just a storage room, bathroom, and laundry unit, or upstairs where there is a loft study, a bathroom, and two bedrooms. One is locked. There are no bathrooms on the ground floor so excuses abound.

There’s also Romantic piano music playing on an honest-to-God gramophone. The whole house is restored original wood, antique furniture, old books, and nice art. Balthier is extremely pleased with his ship-like house and happy to finally show it off. He also asked Strange to enchant it to make it more or less metaproof for the evening.

TLDR:
-There will be a fine meal and plenty of alcohol
-Balthier will be giving Loki poison as condiments at some point (don’t @ him David and Billy) ((definitely @ him))
-There’s music if anyone wants to dance
-There are private places to slip into
-The house has been metaproofed to some extent by Stephen but Balthier will frown upon breaking his stuff
-Chaos pls

[Otto and the actuator appear to exchange a quick glance, though it's a little hard to tell behind his sunglasses. This is odd, because on some level...they're sort of just Otto's limbs? But also, not exactly. He decides to let it do what it likes in response to that, which appears to be looking at the hand slightly closer before turning its attention back to Bert's face. Well, then.]

I'm surprised how many classics we all seem to have in common, between our various worlds. The current culture here is nothing like my world's, but all of this - I do recognize most of these.

[Bart gives a small shrug, and lets his hand drop. There was something about the limbs that made him think they weren't quite mere appendages, but he let it go. Again, asking was a pretty personal thing.]

That's certainly true. Although the details can be a little different between worlds. Like there are worlds out there where nobody has powers, except in stories.

My world was very close to that.

[He reasserts control, withdrawing the actuator. It's good for them to have some limited interaction with others, he thinks, but the keyword is limited.]

We only had one person with powers, as far as anyone knew. [Otto's not including himself; "terrible lab accident" is not a superpower.] And that was a fairly recent thing.

There's always been people with unusual abilities in my world. Some aliens, some supernatural, some from other sources. It's just how it worked. I was raised by a guy who literally skipped forward across time like a stone on a lake.

[personal profile] doctopoda 2022-05-17 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Really. How did that work?

[personal profile] kid_flash_found 2022-05-17 11:34 pm (UTC)(link)
It's a speedster thing. I mean, we all know how time slows down the faster you go, so technically, the folks who flew on the space shuttle are maybe a second or two younger than the rest of us, relativistically. This is more, well, you go as fast as you can and take a blind leap. It's really hard to control when you end up, or where. It could be a decade or two, or a thousand years.

[Bart doesn't want to go into how they're pretty sure that the Speed Force helps with pulling someone where it thinks they need to be. It's...spiritual, and that doesn't always go over well. Most people don't like the idea of fate or destiny.]

I've never done it. I've got too much holding me back.

[personal profile] doctopoda 2022-05-18 01:52 am (UTC)(link)
Sounds like a dangerous thing to attempt.

[The physics of it does track, if we're accepting the basic premise of human beings who can outrun light. Which, well, Otto's given up on skepticism at this point.]

So you're a "speedster"?
kid_flash_found: (lightning)

[personal profile] kid_flash_found 2022-05-18 02:42 am (UTC)(link)
Not much involving speed of that variety isn't. Try having to worry about escape velocity running up the side of a building sometime.

[He shrugs, because it's not something he really hides.]

Third generation in my family. First one born with the speed, though. Usually the lightning comes later.

[personal profile] doctopoda 2022-05-18 02:34 pm (UTC)(link)
[That doesn't actually disprove Otto's point! But, you know, he's well aware that people from other worlds are more accustomed to all this power stuff than he is.]

The two previous generations just got superpowers? Is that common?

[personal profile] kid_flash_found 2022-05-18 05:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Almost unheard of, actually. It's rare for two members of the same family to have powers, and even less likely they have similar ones. I don't know how much of it is that most powers in humans are the results of pretty extreme and unlikely situations or other things.

[He can't help glancing at the actuators, but doesn't ask.]

The things I can do are a part of me. I've never been normal, or really wanted to be. I can't imagine not being able to read a book in seconds and the little things like that.

[He doesn't ask, but Otto does follow Bart's glance.]

Wouldn't really call them a power. [That was just a hideous lab accident!] This is all new for me. It was only a few months before I ended up here.
