Birdie takes care of that little predicament, though, by testing things herself. A lot has been said and Jaskier barely has time to react (ironic, considering that's usually how he makes others feel around him).]
What do you mean plays itself, how the fuck does that not count as bloody haunted--
[He wants to stop her, but then she starts playing, so he's morally obliged to shut up and listen, haunted instrument or not. Spooky music also deserves respect. He can't help tapping his fingers on the brim of his hat, bobbing his head a little too. Sadly, before he can do any real absoring and analyzing of the piece, Birdie stops playing. Jaskier can't help pouting - only a few bars? Boo!]
So that was all you? Quite a lovely melody - you have very skilled fingers. [He side-eyes the piano again, still a bit wary, but at least he doesn't hesitate to come closer this time.] Mayhap it was offended I wouldn't even know what it was? Strings are usually more my style.

It was all me, thank you! [ Birdie turns and waggles those skilled fingers at him for a second, grinning. If he plays his cards right he can get more of that song, or as many songs as he likes. Praise is a hell of a drug, and she looks particularly pleased by the compliment. ] No ghosts far as I can tell. If they play themselves, though, it's a mechanical thing not a dead stuff thing. Lots of levers.
[ Explaining it in further detail isn't really necessary at the moment. (And also she's not entirely sure about what other details there are, the levers thing is a guess.) Jaskier had played well when he was at the keys. Probably better than Birdie can play, if she wanted to be very honest about it. The problem has now evolved from 'what's wrong with the piano' to 'what's up with this guy's apparently new piano skills?'
There's a theory percolating in the back of her mind. It's not common, but sometimes someone is Embraced into the Daughters of Cacophony with no inclination toward singing, but they always take to the skill in their early nights regardless of their previous interest or knowledge. She's not sure if it translates when instead of an Embrace and blood magic it's showing up in a different universe, but maybe... ]
You've really never played one before? [ Time for a small experiment! Birdie turns back to the piano. ] There's strings inside it, so it's the same theory mostly. Just with keys and a lot more strings inside. Hit a key, it hits the string.
[ To demonstrate, she starts plunking out the top melody of 'Heart and Soul' to see if he'll stop side-eyeing it long enough to try it out with her. ]

A mechanical thing! How could that even be a thing?! A machine can't grasp the subtleties of music! What is art without the heart and soul of the artist? Who WAS the evil mind behind such a despicable plan to destroy the opportunities of an entire new generation of musicians?!
[Point him toward this person so he can write a very insulting ballad about them, thank you.]

No, there isn't such instrument in my realm.
[As soon as she begins playing, he freezes. Because this time, his mind is filling with notes and lyrics: he knows this song. He's never heard it before, but he fucking knows it.
...it may not be the piano after all.
Jaskier takes a moment to catch his breath and very slowly take a seat next to Birdie on the bench. He's hesitant to put his hands on the keys, but soon he's playing with her, blue eyes fixated on his own fingers with a mix of awe and nerves.
Before he even notices, his mouth joins as well.]
♫ Oh! but your lips were thrilling, much too thrilling / Never before were mine so strangely willing ♫ [He sounds a bit stiff at first, but as soon as he catches on the meaning of the song, he pours all his heart into it.] ♫ But now I see, what one embrace can do / Look at me, it's got me loving you madly / That little kiss you stole / Held all my heart and soul ♫
[His hands are trembling a little, and he can't help worrying his lower lip for a moment before he finally whispers-] I never heard this song before either.

Birdie sits back once the song is over, hands off the keys, and gives him a moment to grapple with himself about it. When she speaks again she keeps her voice even and light. ]
Seems like a pretty enviable skill. Especially if you're already a musician. There's a group of us back where I'm from, and it works like that if we perform together? We all just... Know the words, know the song, but it only works for the singing. Everything else we have to learn the hard way.
[ Her tone is somewhere between 'please don't freak out' and 'see it's not that weird, please don't freak out.' ]
Being perfectly honest, I'm kinda jealous.

Jaskier's heart is beating so fast, he swears it's going to jump out of his chest any second now. He stares at his hands as he absorbs Birdie's words, trying to come to terms with them and their meaning, especially when she mentions the hard way.
Is he cheating?
It's not like he's opposed to cheating when it comes to stuff like gwent, but what about this? Art needs practice and talent, not fucking cheating. He goes over what just happened and realizes his voice started stiff, so he isn't automatically good at it, right? He had to adapt to the song.
With the tip of his tongue peeking out as it often does when he concentrates, Jaskier chooses an old traditional folk song and tries a line or two on the piano. Then he pauses and tries again with a different arrangement - neither of them is bad, but he could fusion many alternatives until he finds which one captures the spirit the best. Then he raises his head to look inside the music shop through the window, looking at the different instruments and feeling the instructions flood his mind.
Oh. That's it- instructions. Metaphorical ones, shaped like energy, but still. They're made of notes and staves, and the more they scratch his mind and itch his fingers, the more he's sure a non-musician would play them clumsily. The magic saved him from all the process of memorization, but it's still his talent.
Jaskier sighs with relief - it's not cheating! It's just--]
Knowledge! [He says with a laugh.] Total and absolute music knowledge! Sensational! Extraordinary! My very own superb library of--
[...oh, right. The woman is here. For once in his life, Jaskier isn't thinking with his dick, although he didn't mean to ignore her either. With a gasp, he grabs her hand in both of his, grin still splitting his face in two but blue eyes honest in their gratitude.]
My lady, I would've never wanted to fill your heart with such a dreadful emotion! [Although someone being jealous of him does feel nice, not gonna lie.] Your guidance has been more helpful, how could I ever repay you?
[The question is asked with a softer, more affectionate voice. It's never too late to start thinking with your dick.]
