David comes over more regularly these days, so it isn't hard to be natural about suggesting a dinner in on a Friday evening after work. What's more difficult is hiding the evidence that he's working on something up on the roof, especially since David is more comfortable coming in and out without much warning these days. Balthier loves that, truly, and is willing to work around it, even if he thinks his cover has been blown more than once. One night he had to illusion a package of lights to look like anything else. Normally he'd never use his power on David, so he hopes this is alright.

Regardless, it comes together, and he takes the day off work to spend it cooking. He's been slowing practicing throughout the summer, figuring out how to put together things that remind him of home. And he does know how to make cake, so he does that too.

David's running late that day -- Balthier might have asked the office to delay him -- so that by the time David makes it over, the sun is getting close to setting and everything is ready to go. Balthier is still getting a hand of the new powers he discovered when his own came back to him, but the slow spells have been particularly useful for keeping food hot or chilled.

The only thing left to do is change, something else he's been working on all summer, trying to find pieces that still feel like himself. So it's the first time he's wearing both a simple black crop top and a high waisted, flowing circle skirt with a patterns that reminds him of home. His earrings and rings and bracelets are all on of course, and a heavy pair of leather shoes, and somehow he feels...settled. Like himself. Home.

The only thing that's missing is David, and that's not going to last hardly any longer.

"I think I like that you can't retain it so easily. Leaves me something to impress you with, and my ego might be too delicate for you to be good at everything." He is of course grinning as he says it.

To the question he shakes his head slightly, grin softening. "You always feel like home, love." Not the familiar foods and aesthetics from his childhood kind. The kind that makes him feel at once safe and rooted while also wanting to be the best man he can be, to shake at the things that aren't serving him anymore. "It's entirely up to you."

"I don't think your ego is anywhere near delicate, my dear. It's rightly large and you're quite skilled," he points out, smiling to the other. Yeah, the guy needs to hear it. Because building up his love is worth it.

"Well, I don't want to miss out on this food you worked so hard on, so I suppose I'll have to be content with what I'm in."

Maybe some day he'll be over enjoying that David likes his ego, but if he does, it's far off from tonight.

And David sticking around for his food is even a better compliment. "Yes, let me bully you into submission with food and romantics." Please. He'll enjoy it.

Like this. He scoops some of a spicy hummus-like dip onto flat bread, holding it up for David to bite.

Oh that comment earns a grin. Really, his mind has gone places.

"Into submission is it? Is that something you enjoy?" he teases, even as he leans forward to take the offered morsel.

"Oh babe, that's good," he groans. "I want that on a bagel."

Balthier hadn't even intended the double meaning that time -- look how much you distract him, David, not entirely aware of his words -- but David's grin puts him there and he's grinning back, because he likes being immediately thought of that way, and he will of course note David's interest.

"I'll admit it's an attractive proposal. Leading you to shake and yell for me. See you relinquish control entirely."

They've got all night, love. Do give him more ideas.

At the latter, he laughs, though. "I am positive we can find bagels in the morning and satisfy that desire."

Oh yes, so much interest. But he doesn't pry right now. Not when there is food. Or he wouldn't let himself be distracted if Balthier didn't talk like that. Oh dear. He licks his lips.

Except dinner.

"Lovely. Especially if there is some extra leftovers from what is already a beautiful looking dinner."

David's eyes glaze over for a moment. Balthier sees the way he licks his lips. There's heat pooling in the pit of his stomach, but he won't chase it right now. He is proud of the meal he made.

Still, David caught between two desires is one of his favorite things, and he won't resist prodding it.

"I did all this work; I plan to enjoy it for more than one evening. Besides, I thought there'd be a good chance we'd both be properly exhausted come tomorrow."

"Oh, perhaps we will," David agreed, his voice smooth and promising before he serves himself another piece of bread with the dip. So good.

"I think I need you to cook for me more. You're so good."

Well that's certainly a compliment that hits and Balthier is caught between beaming and being a smidge flustered about it. He knows David wouldn't offer that emptily, and David's cooking is divine.

"With flattery like that I won't be hard to convince." He pulls a mix of olives, cheese, oil, and spices closer, tapping one of his fingers in the oil before holding it up. "Smell this." It's extremely fresh oil, light and fragrant.

Oh, it was a compliment that was supposed to strike deeply. Because David was proud of his skills as a chef, ones that were both borrowed and deliberately developed. So yes, he knew that was a very serious compliment. And he was glad to see the man appreciated it.

Though he does lean in to smell the oil. Yes, it's very well treated. He's not as used to things you dip into oils so he's not as good at mixing those up. But this smells good. And, mischief in his eyes, David leans forward to lick the oil from that finger.

"Wonderful."

Balthier quite likes that David lets him into something so important to the other man, and that it turns out their skills complement each other much more than they compete. Balthier's happy to play support in the kitchen, and more than happy to fill out the places David isn't already strong. When things quiet down, they'll have to have a dinner party again. He liked that.

Tonight, though, he's more than pleased to have David to himself, and that tongue on his finger is enough to send his thoughts scattering. He grins. "You wonderful tease."

"Tease? You're the one teasing me with culinary delights," David said, taking the bread and scooping up some of the mixed loveliness that Balthier had made.

"Oh god, seriously, I'm going to pay you to make lunches for me."

That gets a laugh, a real one. "If you think money is going to motivate me I have to question how much attention you've paid to me. But I will absolutely keep in this mind for bribing you to come spend the night on a work night."

"Hey, I didn't say the payment would be in money," David laughs with a smile. "But you know you can try and bribe me. Just give me fair warning. I have a housemate I try and make sure has a good breakfast, so I'd want to have something he can just pop into the oven."

Trying to be supportive of Tommy is important to him.

"You're the last person I wish to keep a ledger with," he says, pressing a kiss to David's lips, tongue licking stray oil from his bottom lip and surely not just to tease the other back. "But if you see fit to shower me with gifts and attention in return I shan't turn them down."

If it were anyone other than Tommy, he'd make some joke about them being able to take care of themselves for one day, but he knows that's still rough skies for David, and seeing as he got the better end of things, all things considered, he isn't going to push; none of that was Tommy's fault. Still, "Make something for the freezer so I can surprise you now and then." That one's an order, not a question.

"Good," David says. He doesn't want to be doing payment in kind at all. He just wants his moment of happiness with his lover.

"I will absolutely shower you with things, my love. That's what we do."

Still, he has to smile. Yeah, he can do that.

"I'll make sure I do. It's not a bad idea. I can write instructions on top."

It is what they do, and it's finally been long enough that Balthier trusts that's just who they are, and that it isn't some period of sweetness that's going to dry up, become boring, and be tossed aside. That rootedness is something he wouldn't trade anything for, not even the mess it took to get here.

"You know, I've been working on attaching an illusion spell to objects to help obscure people. I wonder if I could attach a slow spell to dishes to keep them from heating or cooling." It's essentially what he's done up here, except he's holding the spell manually. "Do you want to test for me if I get some prototypes together?"

They have been together long enough that the honeymoon phase is probably passed. After all, half a year together, more or less, was hopefully enough to help them both adjust to the pleasure of who they are together. And they are... They are happy.

"You have other magics you can access here?" David asked, definitely intrigued. ACtually, he'd SO want to science that shit. "We should try it. Together. Please, let me make charts. I love charts."

Forgive him if he's still wary about good things, especially relationship ones, drying up. But that worry is lessened lately; half a year is indeed substantial time, and they've seen so much of each other, and more importantly, showed up for the other when it's mattered. So Balthier's been letting himself trust that happiness more, and as much as that event was painful, having David choose him when there was, presumably, another good option has begun to heal something very old and very deep in him. He's desired, not because he's what is available, but because he's wanted as he is. He's enough. There are still days he worries, days he's low, but overall, he trusts this. Trusts David. Maybe even trusts himself.

To the question, he nods. "I noticed after my powers returned. It's similar to something I could do it home, and I realized the others may be as well. I'm wondering if my magic warped, like my bike did, to account for the lack of Mist her." At David's enthusiasm, he grins. "I love a chart someone else has made, so yes, we can make a project of it."

Well that's an interesting proposition to put forth. David serves himself more of the wonderful appetizers as he considers.

"If your magic is altered, then it's possible that with time we can help you rediscover how to do more of it, if we understand how much it has skewed and in what manners. If we can study those current changes..."

Well, he's excited at the prospect.

"WE could set up a space to work on it in my lab if you want."

David continuing to enthusiastically eat what he's made is exactly the kind of praise that fills Balthier to brimming.

And wanting to investigate his magic together isn't far behind.

"I would be delighted."

And because he knows they could just keep eating appetizers and dip all night and be happy, but he's gone through all the trouble of making other things, he pulls over the three dinner pieces, a vegetable, a goat, and a lamb, each in sauces with potatoes and vegetables, not wildly unlike Indian food. "Alright try everything and after that I won't complain if you only want to eat one thing." He has one other appetizer but he likes to eat them at the end, always has, so he'll save them a bit longer.

The statement of delight earns a smile from David. Yeah, that's something he's cool with. But the other food earns a wide-eyed gaze. This is so damn good.

"Oh man, it smells like so much. Where should I start?"

"Now you know why I like my food complex. I usually mix them together over rice, but you can eat them with flatbread the too." He serves a plate for them to share. There are forks and bread both close by. And this magical way of keeping the food hot is wonderful -- that had been his only real concern.

Scions, he's forgotten to even get into the wine, but he doesn't much care. That's lovely to have with cake after, too.

"It reminds me of some foods here. Indian specifically. Maybe some Middle Eastern?"

But it could be something else too. For now he's happy to just try something from the plate offered to him.

"Thank you, for doing this. I've been so tired lately."

“We’ll have to try more of those when we go out.” He’s had a little, but not much.

He puts an arm around David, pulling him close when the other isn’t in danger of losing his food to his lap. “I know. And you’ve gotten better at letting me take care of you.” Honestly Balthier’s been tired too, but his living situation hasn’t as complicated, and the steady set of tasks to work on has been calming, especially when his mind won’t settle to draw.
