LOCATION: ASCENDANT

( considering ascendant is not only kai's workplace but place of residence, he can be found there most days.

sometimes he is out front at the bar mixing drinks, other times he is sequestered in the kitchen where he personally prepares any number of dishes from the menu. it will come as little surprise for those who are familiar with him that he is usually in high spirits, always brimming with energy and more than willing to strike up random conversations with a bright smile on his face. he seems to love to talk. a lot.

every so often, kai can also be located on the second floor of the pub, a microphone in hand while he performs either a solo or a duet for his patrons. he will never hesitate to encourage and even pull someone up on stage with him. after all, it's more fun when you're singing with somebody else.

whether you're at the ascendant out of curiosity or you're seeking new job opportunities, kai is here to be the affable host.

occasionally, he does disappear from the outer part of the establishment though, slipping further into its depth through a magically sealed door on the far right corner of the first floor, usually with either a VIP guest or employee in toll.

he does have aspirations that extend far beyond the walls of the ascendant.

his seemingly neutral stance has been realized and acknowledged by most of the criminal underworld in central city. ascendant is akin to a makeshift switzerland and he welcomes all types to come and deal business on impartial grounds.

but when he isn't overseeing transactions (or disputes) between clients in the back, kai handles the flow of little black cards that he distributes to his mercenaries. if you're one of them and you've completed a job, feel free to make an exchange with him and swap out your card for a new one. )

LOCATION: CENTRAL CITY

( just because he runs a lucrative business doesn't mean that kai is constantly at the ascendant.

he is always out and about, seeking entertainment and new friendships wherever he goes. during the day, he can normally be found in the food district, either shopping for ingredients or sampling various dishes. the more people around, the likelier kai will be present.

he seems to be very fond of lively and crowded places.

during the evenings, kai occasionally makes his way to a different section of the city — a far less friendly and much more dangerous one. strangely, he never seems to be bothered or wary of his surroundings when he is wandering through these streets, no matter what's happening around him.

there could be a robbery in progress or a fight breaking out between a superhero and one of the many villains in central city. the most he will do is slow his tracks for a few moments to watch the show before he continues on his merry way.

maybe he should lend a hand to the helpless or he should assist with crowd control, but if that's the expectation you have for him, then you may very well be disappointed each and every time. he claims to be neutral, not good.

besides, he has much more pressing matters at this hour of the night. he, like so many others, need to eat too. )

[ It's the night of the full moon, which means it's one of the two nights per month that Angela's monster curse rears its ugly head. Literally, in that her eyes have gone yellow with horizontal black slits for pupils, and two large, sharp horns have grown from the sides of her head. She strides— or, rather, stomps— into her workplace, black card in hand, seeking out her employer to collect her dues, and exchange the card for her next assignment.

She finds Kai on the second floor, where he is just wrapping up a solo song. She meets his eye and nods, to indicate that she wishes to speak with him. She expects that he will want to bring her back to one of the more private rooms of the club to discuss business.

What she does not expect, is him pulling her on stage with him to perform a duet together first. ]

( spontaneous duets is almost a requisite to working for kai parker. he just loves having fun, you know? especially the sort that entertains him the most. besides, who doesn't love karaoke? there is no judgment here even if someone reeeaaally sucks at it.

well, no— that's a lie. but he sure loves to tell people that to get them on stage.

angela should have just waited for him downstairs, but since she served herself up on a silver platter for him, she was easy pickings. shoving a mic into her hand, he flips through the selection of songs, commenting brightly. )

You're looking fierce today. Loving the whole horned look. Got a favorite song?

[ Angela wants to protest that she has no time for these games. But honestly... she's being paid to be here, so anything she does is on Kai's dime. She still looks put out, but she'll play along. ]

[ Not exactly the most rousing number for karaoke, but it is her favorite. ]

[ Tim had left messages for Kai to keep him updated on his condition, but they've been at random hours when he's remembered. It isn't entirely that he hasn't wanted to catch his boss when he's available for a chat, whether on the phone or text but... yeah, a little bit avoidant.

Still, he makes the trip to Central City specifically to find out if he still has a job and, if possible, beg another week off. While the Ascendant isn't an overtly dangerous establishment, it's still a bar. Tim would prefer to be at least at 75% before showing up for a shift. He's not even supposed to be in the city yet. Does the clown like karaoke? To be determined. ]

Hey, Mr. le Livre. Do you have time to talk?

[ Tim has caught Kai on the way to the back. He gives his best sheepish wave and does his best to look like someone who's been severely ill. Really, it's barely worth the effort of the hunched shoulders and shuffling steps - he lost ten pounds and only gained back two. Tim is peaky and tweaky, and he's only recently started sleeping a solid five hours a night again. ]

( to be honest, he didn't pay much attention to the joker's entire gimmick.

he saw the video and he sure did recognize his employee in the video, yet it didn't seem like it was his place to interfere, you know? it was targeted to a more heroic audience, which he, well— frankly isn't. does that make him a bad boss? probably.

well, it ultimately doesn't matter because little timmy is doing just fine now. he has been receiving sporadic updates from him and now he is even showing up at the ascendant on his own two feet. good for him — even though he kiiinda looks like he needs more rest.

setting down the cloth he has been using to wipe a glass, kai greets him as he nods towards an entryway on the left behind the bar. )

Hey Timmy. Sure, let's chat in the kitchen. ( he motions for tim to join him behind the counter and head towards the next room. )

[ Ordinarily, Tim would correct the 'Timmy', but between the favor that he's going to ask and Kai's willingness to employ an unaffiliated metahuman whose documentation is sketchy at best? He can call him whatever he wants.

Tim follows him into the backroom and immediately starts apologizing. ]

I'm sorry I haven't been able to take any shifts the past few weeks. I'm not contagious anymore; don't worry.

[ It isn't that Yennefer has actively sought to avoid Jaskier, but she has the distinct feeling that the man, having been without anyone from their sphere in at least a month, is compelled to make up for lost time — meaning it's been rare for her to go anywhere without him incorporating some excuse to accompany her, or a reason for why he should be her escort.

This is the first opportunity she's had to go off on her own and explore since they found one another, and when she inadvertently finds what appears to be a tavern, although one designed like none she's ever familiar with, she walks in and doesn't make her presence known so much as wanders through the surroundings, ultimately ending up at the bar proper.

It seems to be a matter of simply assuming a seat and ordering a drink — as straightforward as one can get — so she takes a spot toward one side of the bar itself, bracing her hands against the bartop and threading her fingers together as she waits. Apparently, one of the cards the city has given her contains enough coin to take care of her needs, even if she's not accustomed to paying in this fashion yet. It's a concept she's still mulling over when the man tending bar approaches her. ]

kai already had one awkward run in with the doctor strange here, so he is opting to play it cool with the woman who'd just seated herself at his bar. he never spoke to her in new amsterdam anyway, so it makes little difference to encounter her here. )

We have whiskey, champagne, wine... ( he motions at the collection of bottles behind the bar before he slides a menu across the counter to her. ) We have these too if you're feeling adventurous. Looove the cocktails. Also have you ever tried fruity vodka?

[ No one who's ever met Yennefer might describe her as particularly adventurous, but she's also slowly coming to an understanding of what this world's liquor selection has to offer. On the Continent, it's often a case of who can brew, ferment, or otherwise engineer the most attractive lagers — she suspects there's a running competition between those who prefer things like Redanian lager or Viziman champion — but it's also among the most commonly-found beverages since it's cheap and easy to make, and even cheaper to purchase in a tavern.

Therefore, she wants to see what finer options are available, rather than something that can be served from a keg. ]

Never heard of it. [ No sense in pretending otherwise, as her gaze darts behind him to the array of bottles behind the bar and then drops down to the list in front of her. ] The... cocktails have what in them, exactly? Liquor and some other component?

( adam isn't very fond of kai.

he talks a lot, he's noisy, adam hasn't quite decided if he's the kind of person he wants to be around at all, but. kai invites him out for burgers, they made a thing around it, and adam--doesn't hate kai; he tolerates him. so he can tolerate him through another lunch.

so he slides into the booth across from kai, pretends to look at the menu even though he's already made his choice on what he intends to order: the smallest, cheapest burger. adam doesn't necessarily need to be on a budget but he's saving in case he does need to be, later. )

What have you been up to? ( seems like a decent conversation starter, right. )

( should he call adam skittish or overly cautious?

his charm doesn't seem to be very effective against him. even though he doesn't show it outwardly, kai knows that he isn't adam's favorite person to be around. he doesn't particularly care, of course. most people dislike him upfront, so it isn't anything new. still, they were both in new amsterdam together and adam at least knows more about him than most of the folks here, so why wouldn't he want to spend more time with him?

looking through the menu, kai lifts his gaze to look at adam for a long moment before he shrugs his shoulders nonchalantly. )

Oh, the usual. I've just been managing my business. ( he returns his attention to the food options. ) You should come down to the Ascendant sometime. I'll give you a friend discount. ( (: ) What have you been up to?

[ ms. marvel still didn't get why they didn't want to meet up at tony's company, but she didn't take it to heart. she picks up a heart duo of gyros and fries, their favourite, finds a nice rooftop and texts him the location.

tony doesn't remember her, but she knows he'd still come. he always came when she called. ]

[ there is a number of reasons why tony doesn't want kamala to find out about wellness. the last thing he needs is to be put in a position where he has to explain to a kid what the company does. honestly, it isn't anything to be ashamed of, but the sheer thought of it still makes him grimace.

after receiving her texts, he gives her a confirmation that he'll be there before he heads out from his office. it doesn't take him long to arrive at the rooftop, iron man lowering onto the concrete floor before the suit seemingly disappears into his body, replaced by a more casual outfit of a dark grey t-shirt and black jeans. ]

Hey Kamala. [ he greets her with a smile as his eyes lands on the food. ] Next time, it'll be my treat, alright?

Sure thing, boss.

[ kamala raises her gyro in salute before vicariously biting into it. ]
