• Faculty Preparations & Mingle (Before September 8th)
  The faculty of Lofty Heights has a lot to do before the school year actually starts — prepping their classrooms, working out a curriculum, getting to know each other, getting the office to order the right supplies.



• The Wormhole Projectors on the Bus Go Pew Pew Pew
  The bus stops for Lofty Heights students are peppered throughout each of the cities. Parents and students alike are waiting there to be picked up.
  
  Once you're on the road, things seem normal... until a womrhole opens up. The bus goes right through it, and suddenly all you can see out the window is clouds below... and the massive floating school complex on the horizon.

[ Nico bristles at the question and its implications and rushes to defend his dad. ]

Hades isn’t “locked up” anywhere. There’s more to the Underworld than Tartarus, and no, he doesn’t live in Tartarus. It’s the Pit. Why would he build his palace there?

[ More quietly. ] Not even he wants to go to Tartarus.

He is in my world, at least according to Wonder Woman. [She's read a collection of Greek myths annotated by Wondy.]

I guess he's not, like, a supervillain where you're from?

So your world sucks, and I don’t know who Wonder Woman is.

[ He doesn’t want to know who Wonder Woman is, either. Whatever world she’s from, it makes no difference to him. ]

He’s not a supervillain! He’s a god, not some mortal who’s “good” or “evil”. Just because his domain is the Underworld doesn’t mean he’s bad. Someone has to be in charge of the Underworld and the dead. It just happens to be him. He does what needs to get done, and everyone treats him like he’s beneath them until something goes wrong.

[ It’s the but that does. “Sorry, but”. He hears the discomfort loud and clear - and the implied “you can’t sit with us.”

Nico looks over to the teacher’s table. No one’s paying him any attention anymore, so he stands up and starts gathering his things. He should’ve said it was for Hermes. Everyone likes Hermes.

But Nico’s tired of pretending he’s things that he’s not. ]

Forget it. Next time, don’t ask people about their gods if you’re not gonna like the answer.

[She curses under her breath and almost moves to stop him.]

That's not what I meant! I- didn't mean to offend you. But I don't think the League was lying about Hades, either. It's something we have to get used to here, that people with the same name can be very different in our different universes. And- so you'll probably get a lot more people saying stuff about Hades that doesn't apply to yours.

I don’t have to get used to it.

[ He already is used to it, at home, but there it’s only people being stupid about what they think Hades is in one world and judging Nico for that. ]

And neither do you. If I told you your parents were serial killers trapped in Tartarus to suffer for all eternity, what would you do? If I asked you if you knew them after that, would you feel safe saying ‘yes?’ Would you feel threatened if I told you to get used to it?

[ The colour is draining out of the orange on Nico’s tray as he vents. ]

I don't know how I'd feel! I do- [and she suddenly pales. Even if he doesn't recognize the name Wonder Woman, there's not much she can say about being dropped into the middle of the Bat-mess without giving too much away. At least she caught herself before she blurted anything out.]

There's not much we can do. We're all stuck here for whatever reason. We're already being blamed by the people who live here for all their problems. We're finding out more about the universe than we ever thought possible. I have to roll with the punches, or else I'd shut down.

I'm sorry I insulted Hades, and you. I- I really thought you might've just been some dreg who'd set the cafeteria on fire and say it's an offering to a god as a sick joke. I've met those types at home. I've seen the monster who inspired them here. Except he's the same, and neither are the heroes with familiar names. I- was trying to find out more about where you were from, using what I knew, so we could compare. That's seemed to work with other people. But it was insensitive, and- I should have guessed.

I knew that a fire in a trash can wasn’t going to make me any friends, and I didn’t care.

[ While his behaviour might be shocking, he’s honest about it. ]

I’m used to giving offerings before meals - I’m not “some deep who’d set the cafeteria on fire” and let kids die in the fire.

[ But she’s still calling Hades a monster, he thinks, and he’s just. Done.

Doubly done because he’s been practically begging his father to help him and has heard nothing, but she’s seen Hades?! It’s crushing. Nico had thought that - that things had improved the past 5 years. ]

I can compare my world to this one without you. Enjoy your lunch.

[ Nico shoulders his bag and rolls out like a storm cloud, tossing his second lunch tray in the trash as he goes. ]
