Dylan's 15th Birthday Bonfire

SETUP

(CLOSED to Dylan's housemates & anyone who might have showed up early to help prep)

Setting up for the party beforehand.

FOOD

Autumn has set in. The daytime is cool, the evenings are chilly, and there's a bonfire roaring in one of Diana's fields. Dylan's been prepping food for the party all morning — There's sausages, s'more supplies, and shish kebabs stacked with meat & vegetables. There's even some sweet potatoes! He saw a video on Japanese street food and wanted to try cooking potatoes on the fire in foil.

As for drinks, of course water and soda are available, but he managed to borrow some coffee urns from a kind caterer in town in exchange for a little manual labor. Now he's got a great setup for hot coffee, hot chocolate, AND hot cider all evening!

There's also a VERY large sheet cake for serving later. He'd been offered a brain-shaped cake, but the pictures had been a little too realistic, and he didn't think he (or the guests) would find it all too appetizing.

Though he's a little afraid the brain cake is still coming out, whether he likes it or not, but the sheet cake will be what he uses to blow out the candles, thank you very much.

SWORDPLAY

One of the gifts Dylan received was a real-life sword from Diana! He's been taking lessons from her and is ready to try it out. There's a little clearing a little ways from the bonfire where he's trying it out. If you want, you can come and spar — with Dylan, with Diana, or even with each other. With swords, sticks, or even with fists!! Come join the impromptu Fight Club.

EDIT to add: there are real AND wooden swords available for sparring, as well as wooden & straw dummies to practice on as well!

GAME TIME

There are frisbees, a football, soccer balls, even a ninepin set?? Do you have these games in your world? There's all kinds of fun sports gear available. Or you could grab something at random and start a game of Calvinball.

FIRESIDE

With the daylight fading, the fire becomes the center of activity. As you roast marshmallows or weiners (or grab one of those potatoes out of the fire) everyone huddles around, seated on rocks, stumps or lawn chairs as we all sing songs and tell stories.

Any spooky tales from your homeworld? Any songs you'd like to sing? Dylan had gotten a few guitar lessons from Jaskier before he disappeared, so if you start singing, he'll try to follow along with chords!

After-Party Sleepover

"I'll be passing on both, unfortunately. Not a fan of sugar."

He waited until the inspection was done before moving the package to one side. He then paused, hand somewhat extended towards the cat in mute offer of scratches. However, he knew better than to just start petting. That was rude even to a normal cat.

"Always good to be on alert for it regardless. I've heard strange things have a tendency to happen in this town."

Sleeper nudges the hand in an equally non-verbal acceptance of being petted, nor really minding as long as someone is polite about it.

"You're missing out. But there's plenty of other things to eat. There will be a crowd of teenagers having a sleepover, so there had to quite a stockpile to start with." Are they joking? Only somewhat. Teenagers really can eat.

"Feel free to eat my share." If the post with the chocolate was anything to go by, it wouldn't hurt Sleeper.

He began stroking the cat before starting to scratch behind the ears. He gave a small snort.

"Nice to hear some things remain consistent between worlds."

If those teenagers also had powers, it'd probably be like being around a group of blackholes.

"I can't imagine not liking sweets. You are a strange man."

But a good giver of pets, which is what really matters.

"I think it's mostly a human teenager thing, but I didn't spend much time with the youth of other species."

"They used to make me sick. Not so much anymore, but still not a fan of the taste."

He'd always wanted a cat, honestly. If it wasn't for his former lifestyle and regulations at Providence, he would've gotten one. Best to get in what pets he could when he had the chance.

"Pretty sure it's a human teenager thing. It's a lot of changes happening all at the same time. Though in my experience, teenagers with powers are even more bottomless."

Seriously, Rex's name could just as easily be "Garbage Disposal".

"I wouldn't know. The only teenager I've really been in close proximity to is Dylan, and he always was a little different."

They're meeting more, but it's slow. Mostly because Sleeper isn't exactly the kind to go out in public much.

"I can see avoiding something with bad associations."

"Worked with a powered teenage boy back where I came from. I'm still not sure his stomach had a bottom to it."

Sleeper was a cat. Cats were under no obligation to go out and do anything, really.

Six nodded. "I'm perfectly happy with an apple for a dessert. Or a sweet potato given what's here."

"I'm sure you'll find both available. Dylan is trying out roasting the sweet potatoes in the coals. Hopefully it works out."

"Shouldn't be too hard. They were a treat Master would make from time-to-time when I was younger. Same thing with roasting apples."

If need be, he could take over sweet potato cooking duty to prevent them from becoming charcoal.

"You must have had an interesting life before this," Sleeper says. They're curious, of course, but it's not right to pry.

"It was pretty atypical." He then gave a small shadow of a smile. "Things like birthday parties are still new to me."

"I have never had a birthday party, either. When one can expect to live for thousands of years unless killed, it seems less important."

They don't really know what to think about the idea that they might celebrate birthdays, too.

Six blinked. "How old are you exactly?"

"I am not certain, entirely. One cannot easily consult a calendar in space, and the time differences between here and my home Earth would be something to consider. Not an Earth-year, regardless. But we mature very quickly, especially given the unusually nurturing environment my parent chose to provide," they try to explain.

"I am the youngest of Venom's spawn."

"Don't think I've met him yet."

He would soon enough though.

"I'm sure you won't be able to avoid them here."

However, their tone leaves some doubt as to whether that is a good or a bad thing.

Something occurred to Six. "Does that mean Dylan is literally your brother?"

"We share Venom as a parent, yes, although Dylan has the usual two human parents," Sleeper says, knowing how strange that seems. It was unheard of, really.

Six blinked, trying to wrap his head around it.

"I'm not sure I understand."

"We symbiotes bond at a genetic level with our hosts, so Dylan has three parents, his mother, father, and Venom. I am only Venom's offspring, as we produce asexually as a species," they try to elaborate. "It is a rather unusual circumstance for both of us."

"...I think I'm just going to take your word for it."

He wasn't a stupid man, but that...that was a lot to unpack.

"Not a bad plan." Yes, the cat is amused.

Not surprising. It was a cat's world. Humans like Six just lived in it to serve their feline overlords.

"So are you planning to have your own party sooner or later?"

What did one get a cat that could talk?

"I had never really considered it. I am always a cause for celebration on some level. It might be excessive."

Six smirked before holding out his hand to offer more ear scratches.
