Dylan's 15th Birthday Bonfire

SETUP

(CLOSED to Dylan's housemates & anyone who might have showed up early to help prep)

Setting up for the party beforehand.

FOOD

Autumn has set in. The daytime is cool, the evenings are chilly, and there's a bonfire roaring in one of Diana's fields. Dylan's been prepping food for the party all morning — There's sausages, s'more supplies, and shish kebabs stacked with meat & vegetables. There's even some sweet potatoes! He saw a video on Japanese street food and wanted to try cooking potatoes on the fire in foil.

As for drinks, of course water and soda are available, but he managed to borrow some coffee urns from a kind caterer in town in exchange for a little manual labor. Now he's got a great setup for hot coffee, hot chocolate, AND hot cider all evening!

There's also a VERY large sheet cake for serving later. He'd been offered a brain-shaped cake, but the pictures had been a little too realistic, and he didn't think he (or the guests) would find it all too appetizing.

Though he's a little afraid the brain cake is still coming out, whether he likes it or not, but the sheet cake will be what he uses to blow out the candles, thank you very much.

SWORDPLAY

One of the gifts Dylan received was a real-life sword from Diana! He's been taking lessons from her and is ready to try it out. There's a little clearing a little ways from the bonfire where he's trying it out. If you want, you can come and spar — with Dylan, with Diana, or even with each other. With swords, sticks, or even with fists!! Come join the impromptu Fight Club.

EDIT to add: there are real AND wooden swords available for sparring, as well as wooden & straw dummies to practice on as well!

GAME TIME

There are frisbees, a football, soccer balls, even a ninepin set?? Do you have these games in your world? There's all kinds of fun sports gear available. Or you could grab something at random and start a game of Calvinball.

FIRESIDE

With the daylight fading, the fire becomes the center of activity. As you roast marshmallows or weiners (or grab one of those potatoes out of the fire) everyone huddles around, seated on rocks, stumps or lawn chairs as we all sing songs and tell stories.

Any spooky tales from your homeworld? Any songs you'd like to sing? Dylan had gotten a few guitar lessons from Jaskier before he disappeared, so if you start singing, he'll try to follow along with chords!

After-Party Sleepover

The lack of recognition doesn't bother Jason. He had steeled himself for that possibility. Given his current status with Bruce and the rest of the family, perhaps it's for the best for now. It's probably awkward talking to the black sheep of a friend's family. Besides, he's pleased that she can tell he's a fighter.

"Yeah, I have," he replies. "Mostly hand-to-hand though. I only just started learn how to use a sword."

Diana starts towards the center of the makeshift ring, motioning for him to follow her. Even dressed casually as she is, there is no doubt that she is a warrior, from the way she walks to the ease with which she holds her wooden blade. It tracks that she could spot those qualities in someone else, even upon a first meeting.

When she turns to face him again, her smile warms. She spins the sword with one hand, bracer glinting in the afternoon sun. "Then today will be a good lesson for you." She takes her stance, allowing him the first move. She wants to see what level of skill he already has.

Jason smiles back as he takes his stance, trying to have it similar to Diana's.

He knows he's still new to swordsmanship. The weight distribution and stances needed for a sword aren't the same as a combat knife. It's still an adjustment for him to make.

He takes a deep breath and then charges forward, aiming for a jab to her side.

She can tell from the way he moves that he really is new to the sword. But that's alright--he at least seems to have some familiarity, when most people she's worked with today haven't held a weapon before at all.

He's quick on his feet, and there's force behind his swing. But the form isn't quite right--even if it was, she wouldn't have a problem dodging the blow, which she does with a quick side-step. Diana brings her own blade up in short arc, aiming for the center of his back.

Jason tries to dodge but Diana's too quick for him. He staggers from the hit but remains on his feet. As he quickly spins back around to face her again, he's also using the momentum to do a horizonal swing at her.

She's impressed that he's able to keep his feet beneath him, and even more so with the way he turns it into an attack. "Good recovery." It's both a compliment and an instruction; he should keep doing that. The swing is solid, but she raises her sword to block, then twists her wrist to turn it into a parry, trying to knock his sword arm away while at the same time attempting to hook her foot around his ankle for a trip.

Pleased by Diana's comment, he sees the parry coming and grips his sword harder. He's a moment too late to notice Diana's foot though. He awkwardly stumbles, instinctively let goes of his sword and falls over.

"Oof!"

A smile blooms over her face as he negates her parry, and doesn't disappear even as he falls to the ground. His skill is clear, and she respects that. Diana lowers her weapon, then offers him her hand to rise to his feet. "You've been trained well."

Jason gratefully takes her hand and stands back up. He's pleased he was able to defend himself against some of her moves, even if the match was short. He can still learn from the loss.

"Thanks. I have a lot of experience in fighting," Jason replies. "I still got some ways to go with swords though. That was a good move just now."

He's humble in his loss, and her respect grows. She knows that she was not always so, and now likes to see the trait in others. "I could teach it to you, if you'd like." A genuine offer, made without reservation. "And I don't think I caught your name."

"I'm Jason," he replies. "And that would be great if it's not too much trouble for you."

He feels humbled by her offer. He was planning to just learn and observe based on whatever spars he watched for the day but Diana's offer was even better.
