Six never said he agreed with their attitudes, just that he understood them.

He took a moment to eat a bite of his burger. "Five years ago on my world, there was an accident. Nanomachines called 'nanites' that had been originally designed to cure diseases and such were unleashed in an unfinished state. They spread across the globe in a matter of hours, infecting every living thing on Earth. Because of their incomplete programming, they randomly mutate their hosts into what we call 'EVOs', the vast majority of which are feral and violent. Your friends, your loved ones, your plants, your pets, not even you were safe. It's like living with a time bomb in your head and knowing that every living thing around you also has a time bomb in it, but you can't see the timers.

"Kiev, Ukraine, had the misfortune of having a massive amount of nanites due to Earth's magnetic field funneling them towards it. Almost every living thing mutated immediately. Nobody knew what was happening or why, and people panicked, demanding their leaders do something to protect them. The solution the UN came up with was to encase Kiev in a spherical forcefield after evacuating those who hadn't mutated, but there's no guarantee everyone got out since there's no way of telling who mutated and who didn't. Since then, no one is allowed into or out of what became known as 'the Bug Jar'."

He took another sip of water.

"I suspect it's less to do with keeping people safe since the 'monsters' are outside of the forcefield, too, and more to keep people from thinking too hard about the ones they doomed. The majority of EVOs are feral, true, but not all of them. And, as I said, there's no guarantee that every unchanged person got out in time."

And given it had been a city, well, no farms for renewable food sources were in place. No one to maintain water treatment facilities. Not to mention all the feral EVOs that would likely pounce on a potential meal. Honestly, the last fate would've been the preferred one. At least it'd be quick.
