What: Valentine’s Day season at the Descendant Karaoke Bar and Lounge

Where: Central City

[It’s early February and even a place as gritty and tough as Central City isn’t immune to the Valentine’s Day mood.

If one visits the Descendant around this time of the year, one may notice that some of the Gritty the mascot figures are holding fake roses and Cupid bows and arrows. Don’t worry. They’re safe. Really.

In addition, there are two types of songs getting a ton of play. On one side you got romantic and sweet songs such as Truly, Madly, Deeply, My Heart Will Go On, and As Long As You Love Me. On the other side is quite the opposite. These songs about heartbreak. A lot of them also are blow-out torch songs. Classic hits such as You Give Love A Bad Name, I’m Still Standing, and Should I Stay or Should I Go are getting performed with at least as much enthusiasm as the love songs, if not more. Even mobsters sometimes have rough love lives and need to blow off steam.

So whatever your feelings are about Valentine’s Day this year, come drop by for a drink, some entertainment and maybe a bar game or two. Chances are, you’ll be in decent company. Besides, what else could possibly happen in Central City this month?]

[Jason goes over to a shelf and pulls out a secondhand copy of Hamlet. The cover and spine are little worn but otherwise, still in good shape to be read. All of the Descendant’s books in the reading room are donations from individuals or places like Sunset Falls Library. Mayuko tends to drop off a batch from said library on a monthly basis]

You’re welcome. What kind of stuff do you like to read anyway?

A variety. I suppose I read a great deal of nonfiction of late. But I am fond of faerie tales.

It’s a rich genre. So many people know the ones the Brothers Grimm gathered but every culture’s got their own tales.

When it comes to Earth tales, I am more familiar with Lang's collections.

Nice. Most people just know the Brothers Grimm or Hans Christian Andersen’s works because those are the ones that hit mainstream.

I suppose they're the versions that parents read to their children?

[That's mainstream right.]

Sort of. Most people know water-downed versions of their works thanks to adaptations made for kids.

As in picture books?

And in movies usually.

I suppose we may have some of those at the library.

Moviemaking is its own art and like books, some are better than others. Even trickier when it’s an adaptation to an existing work.

I find it difficult to imagine a film improving on a book.

But, as you say, they are their own medium. There must be some stories better told visually.

Definitely. In some ways, it's like watching a more elaborate play.

I suppose they are more similar, but there is a different relationship between the actors and the audience.

[robintohood]

Definitely. Screen actors can depend on editing and doing multiple takes if they need it. Theater actors have to really project and need to get it right on the spot.

Yes, and the audience is, in a way, an active part of the performance.

[robintohood]

Yup. Audience and theater actor feed off of each other to some degree. It’s instant feedback for the actor too.

You ever done theater?

[Sephiroth would certainly be distinct]

No. I am quite content to remain in the audience.

That’s enough for most people. You’ve watched a lot of theater back home?

[He shrugs.] Some. I had more opportunity to read it.

Did you perform?

[robintohood]

Nah. Closest I got was being part of stage crew for my school’s theater club. So more behind the scenes than anything else.
