[Throughout November, you may have seen posts across all the major social media platforms about a new Central City karaoke bar opening up. They even include some nice professional photos of the interior taken by Mark Bryant. Or maybe you’ve heard vague rumors in the criminal underworld about a new safe haven for discussing and doing some illicit business.

Meanwhile in Central City, the renovations of a two-storied building with a basement and an attic were being done swifter than any legally permitted construction project. The owner made sure it was good work done too.

And now at the tail end of the month, there’s a newly opened karaoke bar and lounge known as Descendant. Everyone is welcomed, regardless of their meta status or if they’re part of any guild.


Descendant’s entrance door is relatively innocuous. As soon as you step into the building though, you’re in the security check area and met with bouncers holding metal detector wands. No one’s allowed further in until they get checked. Once you check your weapons, you’ll receive a key labeled with the number of the locker your weapon(s) are in.

In a nod to Ascendant, the previous bar that attracted some of Central’s criminals, much of Descendant’s interior basic layout is similar but now with a speakeasy-esque decor. Once you walk through weapons check, you’re greeted with the first floor being an open space for mingling, drinking, and eating. The walls are visibly brick and the tables and chairs aren’t too fancy. The first floor is also where the bar is.


Further towards the back of the first floor are private rooms for guests to enjoy if they reserve ahead of time and pay extra. The cheapest karaoke rooms are simple and while the most expensive are more luxurious.


One room that makes Descendant unique is the reading room everyone is welcome to use. You're free to drink and enjoy some quiet reading time. Take a book for keeps or donate a book! Quiet conversation is welcome, but overly noisy patrons will be kicked out.


On the second floor are a couple of arcade machines, pool tables, and a stage for live performances. There are plush lounges for people to sit and enjoy the shows, or to take a break between rounds of pool.

With the exception of the reading room and the employee-only areas, you’ll hear music throughout most of the building. It’s either coming from the karaoke machines or from a separate playlist.

Whatever you decide to do, the owner and other attentive employees hope you enjoy your time at their establishment.]

Can't you? I would think it's possible.

I'd be required to always be paired with someone else, and in the right situation to make sure I can use the power.

[Thirty feet. How is he supposed to always be in thirty feet of a useful power?]

I guess it would work best with a team.

Yeah, but too many powers can mean they work together in weird ways. Dangerous ways.

How so?

[Oh boy, that's a damn question wasn't it?]

Okay, so, imagine you've got someone who can control sound waves, and thus hurt people with really painful noises. And then you've also got someone who is made stronger by sounds. Like, stores the energy of them and releases them. Imagine the feedback.

[torchbearer]

Okay, but isn't that incredibly specific? Powers don't always cancel each other out or worse.

[atypical_echo]

I know. But I have a lot of experience with the way powers mix. And it could be dangerous. Really dangerous, in ways I couldn't control.

[torchbearer]

[ hmm. ]

I see.

[atypical_echo]

And when you mix in new powers that I'm not expecting or haven't touched before...

[He finishes his soda and laughs.]

I accidentally started flying once. I got lucky, the guy I was copying it from, he didn't know he could fly. But he had good reflexes. He caught me before I could fly away. And then, when the power would have passed, I could have fallen and gotten hurt.

[torchbearer]

[ this guy has been through the ringer. ]

No wonder you're so cautious.

[atypical_echo]

Bingo.

[There's more to it than that, but he's not doing a full trauma dump. He's trying to explain some stuff. But damn, dude has a good face and is a good listener.]

Fortune may favor the bold, but caution gets you through the day, right?

No shame in that either.

[Well, that's nice to hear.]

How is your drink doing? I can get you a refill if you want. Since I talked your ear off.

[ kyle smiles, dangling the can. ]

Sure, I could top it off with another.

[atypical_echo]

[Mark nods and makes a subtle gesture to get the tender to come over.]

Another of whatever he’s drinking. I’m just paying for his, promise. Oh, and hot chocolate. Might as well.

[The bartender looks at him, considers, then nods to go get another can.]

Alright, there we go.

[Mark nods and waits for his own cocoa to show up.]

So, now that I’ve blathered, you have any questions? Like, things you’re curious about regarding living here?

[torchbearer]

Central seems the most familiar, so it's a good fit. But I'm weighing my options.

[atypical_echo]

I do suggest if you stay here, be careful walking later at night when there is, like, less light? I got mugged once. Got saved by a cool Meta though. Well, I don’t know if the guy was guilded, but he was pretty nice.

Don't worry, I've lived in New York. I'll be careful.

Oh man! I’ve always wanted to go to New York. Jealous. Boston’s been my stomping grounds more recently, but a trip to NYC to do shots of the buildings was always a goal.

[torchbearer]

It does have great architecture.

[atypical_echo]

[It earns a chuckle from Mark.]

Yeah, it does. But it's more than that. It's that New York is both fluid and yet it also lasts. There re things that don't change, and things that absolutely do. And it means things can be different, even over the years, and still recognized.
