[Throughout November, you may have seen posts across all the major social media platforms about a new Central City karaoke bar opening up. They even include some nice professional photos of the interior taken by Mark Bryant. Or maybe you’ve heard vague rumors in the criminal underworld about a new safe haven for discussing and doing some illicit business.

Meanwhile in Central City, the renovations of a two-storied building with a basement and an attic were being done swifter than any legally permitted construction project. The owner made sure it was good work done too.

And now at the tail end of the month, there’s a newly opened karaoke bar and lounge known as Descendant. Everyone is welcomed, regardless of their meta status or if they’re part of any guild.


Descendant’s entrance door is relatively innocuous. As soon as you step into the building though, you’re in the security check area and met with bouncers holding metal detector wands. No one’s allowed further in until they get checked. Once you check your weapons, you’ll receive a key labeled with the number of the locker your weapon(s) are in.

In a nod to Ascendant, the previous bar that attracted some of Central’s criminals, much of Descendant’s interior basic layout is similar but now with a speakeasy-esque decor. Once you walk through weapons check, you’re greeted with the first floor being an open space for mingling, drinking, and eating. The walls are visibly brick and the tables and chairs aren’t too fancy. The first floor is also where the bar is.


Further towards the back of the first floor are private rooms for guests to enjoy if they reserve ahead of time and pay extra. The cheapest karaoke rooms are simple and while the most expensive are more luxurious.


One room that makes Descendant unique is the reading room everyone is welcome to use. You're free to drink and enjoy some quiet reading time. Take a book for keeps or donate a book! Quiet conversation is welcome, but overly noisy patrons will be kicked out.


On the second floor are a couple of arcade machines, pool tables, and a stage for live performances. There are plush lounges for people to sit and enjoy the shows, or to take a break between rounds of pool.

With the exception of the reading room and the employee-only areas, you’ll hear music throughout most of the building. It’s either coming from the karaoke machines or from a separate playlist.

Whatever you decide to do, the owner and other attentive employees hope you enjoy your time at their establishment.]

[Oh, well, that's fair. So he chuckles.]

I bet they bitched about weddings too.

Yeah. All the time.

[Mark laughs and nods.]

It's a right of passage for us all I fear.

Along with the long hours and bad pay.

And the green frosting in my hair.

Green?

Oh yeah. This year there was a wedding I did, and the bride and groom got in a fight when cutting the cake and they broke up in front of my eyes and the cake went flying.

Yikes.

[atypical_echo]

Yeah. There was apparently so much food dye in it that it ruined my shirt. Still got paid.

[torchbearer]

You should count yourself lucky there. Gigs don't usually pan out in paying when they end like that.

[atypical_echo]

Oh, it wasn't even the bride or groom that did. The best man paid it, because he wanted the pictures of what happened. It was weird.

[torchbearer]

Sounds like he saw it coming.

[atypical_echo]

I think he did. I don't think he approved.

[Mark laughs.]

I didn't care. I just wanted paid.

[torchbearer]

That's pretty normal in this business.

[atypical_echo]

[Well, that's not entirely wrong.]

Gotta make rent, you know? And time to clean my camera. All over the lens!

[torchbearer]

[ alex. he used to do that with her. their routine. kyle swallows briefly, pushing it down. ]

That's how it goes.

[atypical_echo]

[Mark's pretty good at reading emotions a lot of the time, but that tended to come down to either being around empaths, or knowing someone for a long time. And Kyle is way too new to him for him to even begin to pick up on that momentary thing.]

It really is. And sometimes you take those bad moments and just enjoy the story it gives you.

Exactly.

You got any really crazy ones?

[torchbearer]

I've gotten some crazy commissions. I did one for a kid restaurant. The amount of changes they put me through made me see that bunny in my sleep.

[atypical_echo]

Oh no.

[Mark actually looks genuinely interested in this. Because with photography there is only so much people can expect of him with editing of his shots. But damn, drawing had it so much worse there.]

I'm guessing they gave you a good brief before hand and then found their desires were just bad?

[torchbearer]

You'd be surprised how many times the mind changes during the process.

I guess I would. Do your contracts come with any limitations on how much they're allowed to fuck with you? Like, it would cut into other commissions.

[torchbearer]

Freelance commission isn't all that cut and dry. And you can't always afford to be picky.

[atypical_echo]

[Mark frowns to hear that. Sucks for him.]

I mean, there's not as much back and forth with things like wedding photography, so I wasn't fully sure on that.
