CONFLUENCE 017

Who: Everyone!
What: A Confluence! An invasion!
When: Early April
Where: Everywhere!
Content Warnings: Nonconsensual life takeover, drug use, death

ARRIVAL
A Confluence, capitalized, is the converging of one or more supernatural forces.

Wherever you were, whatever you were getting up to back home—it doesn't matter anymore. One moment you're standing, laying down, sitting, getting shot at—the next, you're falling. It's not from a short distance, either. The sky opens up, and out of it comes you. Maybe you've got the ability to catch yourself before your face meets asphalt, but if you don't, don't worry about it. The citizens of CENTRAL CITY are here to lend a hand. The thing is, some of them might find it difficult to control their powers. Many of them might keep you from crash landing, but you'll still fall and hurt your leg (if not break it). Their skin is pallid and they have dark rings under their eyes. Well, some of them, anyway.

Whatever way you've arrived, you're here now. Your saviors can't seem to focus to stick around too long, and just absently point out where you're going. That's right: you've been dropped off close to the DIADEM HOTEL and won't have to walk very far to get to your temporary housing.

Welcome to Central City.

DIADEM HOTEL

The DIADEM HOTEL is usually reserved for the obscenely wealthy. Its rooms are enormous, the beds quite literally enchanted to offer the perfect night's sleep, and the food would usually cost your life savings just to sample. But given the circumstances, the Guilds feel it's the least they can do to aid your transition into this world.EVERYTHING is complimentary, and everyone gets an ALLIANCE CREDIT CARD to spend on entertainment, clothing, and whatever other necessities they might need. The cards have an obscenely high limit and there doesn't seem to be an expectation for you to pay it back... though if they catch you abusing it, their accountant will be coming for your head. The employees here seem to be largely untouched by whatever's affecting the citizens outside–but that's probably because they know better than to touch some strange metas they come across.

There's a shopping center immediately across the street. It has an impressive array of outlets that cater to your every need. Food, clothing... and swords? If you can think of it, it's for sale. Although anything clearly supernatural or metahuman seems to be at a minimum and offered under the table. You can grab clothing made to withstand any superpower and a surprisingly mediocre Taco Bell order while you're at it. There's a Super Cinema in the shopping complex across the street that's showing ARCHETYPE 2: WAYS OF THE MOUNTAIN. It's a long, long movie about an alien species that needs to eat rocks to survive. While critically acclaimed, few people can summarize what it's about other than that it's a science fiction marvel for the ages. Not seeing it basically means you're not cool, but it feels like no one has truly seen it because no one even knows what it's really about.

CENTRAL CITY

Typically, Central City is a city of architectural marvels offset by terrible income disparities. Typically, the people here are aware of where not to go; they know which shadows to avoid, which neighborhoods to leave abandoned, and which pizza shops aren't likely to see trouble at all hours of the day. To the outside eye, all of these things remain true. Much of the city continues to be little more than a dilapidated shell of itself–a recurring reminder of what it could be if its citizens weren't afraid of its potential.

At the moment, Central City's citizens are feeling A LITTLE OFF, ALMOST AS IF THEY'RE BOTH IN STEP WITH ONE ANOTHER AND NOT. Why is that? An odd, new INVASIVE SPECIES HAS BEEN TAKING ROOT. That's right. It's pod people time.

To anyone observing the city, nothing has changed. But the people inside will undoubtedly notice the shift. A large number of people have been seen coming from the abandoned, forgotten parts of the city, dressed as if they're keen to return to their 9-5 job. The crime syndicates are keeping quiet; many of its members are fatigued and unaware, trying to go about even their most basic tasks like shaking down local businesses without feeling like they want to fall asleep on their feet.

That's the thing: CENTRAL CITY IS SAFER THAN USUAL because a whole lot of citizens are currently dead on their feet. Not literally–not yet anyway. At first this might seem like a blessing in disguise, but all of the strange behavior is likely to add up. What does this strange behavior look like–and what comes next?

➢ Right now, no one knows that there are pod people, and–in fact–that they have been quietly taking root for a while. A large part of this is because they're difficult to spot before they fully absorb an identity. Think of an ability that makes it hard to focus on someone–that's what's going on with them. As a group, they have a simple cellular structure and seem to have a central nervous system that they share. Yep, it's a hivemind folks. Now–where is that hive?

➢ As a species, the pod people are symbiotic in nature. Their "barely noticeable" forms are only illusions; their true form, at birth, is parasitic and worm-like in nature. They insert through someone's skin and begin to take root, sucking away at their energy bit by bit until they can begin to take on a life of their own. They quite literally form a new body near the hive and hatch out of it. Once they hatch, their host body will begin to wither quickly and die, as its memories and energy are no longer needed. Once they take on this form, they are able to sustain themselves away from a host.

➢ They absorb all aspects of someone's identity: their appearance, their quirks, their memories, and everything else. One might even ask if THEY ARE NOT TRULY THE PERSON THEY TOOK OVER WHEN THEY'RE DONE. Everything about them is the same, after all–EXCEPT FOR A NEED TO CONTINUE TO SPREAD NEWLY BORN PARASITES FROM THE HIVE TO OTHERS VIA TOUCH.

➢ The process of the takeover happens in six steps:
1. INFECTION - the symbiotic parasite is passed via touch

2. ENERGY DRAIN - the parasite begins to take root, causing fatigue in its host

3. MEMORY LOSS AND DISASSOCIATION - there is an odd sense that someone is in two places at once; in addition, it's hard to recall facts about themselves and the people around them

4. HIVEMIND AWARENESS - there is always a sense of power nearby in Central City, as well as safety–there will also be telepathic awareness of other hosts who are at this stage

5. COMPLETE TAKEOVER AND LOSS OF LIFE - the original host begins to wither into a husk, begins to die

6. REBIRTH - the new pod person is born and they are autotrophic in nature: small parasites can be passed from their body, always replicating so that they can continue and spread
COMPROMISED METAS WILL FIND IT DIFFICULT TO ACCESS THEIR POWERS RELIABLY. When the new pod person is born, they will be born with the power that their previous host had.

STOPPING THE POD PEOPLE IS AN OPTION. So is SAVING THEM. No matter what, some investigation into what they are, how to manage them, and if they're truly harmful is needed. After all–being a part of a hive mind might actually not be so bad. It seems to have helped Central City.

CLIFF NOTES.

➢ New arrivals will be appearing in Central City. Their arrival will be expected and handled by a number of local heroes, helpful magic, and a few drones–except all of them (sans the drones) will be feeling tired and a touch under the weather. What gives?

Central City dealing with some pod people. Not obviously, of course, but this is a problem that metas of all types are free to investigate. How people choose to deal with them is up to you, but feel free to hit us up with any questions about this mini-event down below.

Little Love has a … cow problem. Or a goat problem. It depends upon your definition of problem. It's time for the great cow strike of 2023. The goats are just passing the word.

Sunset Falls had a ghostly problem that has now become a withdrawal problem.

Excelsior is on its anti-meta propaganda again. There are some citizens from the city exploring other locations to see if they can spot some trouble. Central City seems like it's in some trouble–it would probably be best not to let the propaganda engine catch wind of that, huh? Pod people are just a different name for metas, as far as they're concerned.

WILDCARD.
Metaheroes takes inspiration from all walks of comics. Take a look at the CITIES to get an idea as to what day to day life is like in the other cities. Perhaps you've encountered a supervillain (or hero) who needs to be thwarted, or a metahuman with unusual powers creating bizarre effects. You can also take a look at the MISSION BOARD to get your start as a professional hero, villain, or vigilante.

What was supposed to be simple reconnaissance on the D'Amicos' remaining bases had quickly turned into something potentially more serious. After quickly warning Dylan, it became clear to all of them that they needed to tell more people. So here they were, sharing intel with each other and trying to work out a plan.

Throughout it all, Jason's also well aware of a question he knows his family is going to eventually ask. How has he been protecting himself? It's not as though Jason was actively hiding his bond with Sleeper. It's just that he didn't feel beholden to tell everyone right away. It felt better that it came up organically instead of him or Sleeper making a big announcement out of it. Talking to Dylan and Ripley for their approvals was different. A symbiote family isn't like a human family.

After all the intel has been shared, he looks at the rest of the room expectedly for questions.

Checking on Dylan (After the 03a prompt):

Well that meeting was... a lot. Jason's been worried about Dylan for a while now. Eddie and Venom leaving was difficult to handle. Then there was the teenager's anxiety after Jason and Sleeper talked to him about being bonded. As if that wasn't enough, there was Dylan seeing Huvrye shot and dropping into the attic safehouse, which in turn was a scene too similar to when Hunter got shot. Now there were these worms who needed guidance and Dylan trying to confront the fear and anger from other Starfallen.

This is a lot for anyone to handle and even worse for a teenager. After the meeting and when most people have left, Jason pulls Dylan towards the stairs leading to the attic.

"How're you feeling?" He asks.

There are certain personal rules that Tim tries to abide by. He likes information to be neat and tidy, and he generally operates on a need-to-know basis. That’s how things work. That’s why he doesn’t put anything Jason does under a microscope - he doesn’t want to know if it’s pyrite or gold.

But the deal is supposed to be that, if it’s something major, please give Tim a heads up so he can dream up five contingencies and thus be prepared for chaos. It doesn’t have to go further than him. He didn’t tell anyone about Kon’s potential human DNA donor.

(Until it blew up in the Teen Titans’ faces, so perhaps not the example to lead with.)

Tim waits until he can catch Jason in the hallway returning from and bodily blocks the path to a private room nexts to the open door of another private room that he’s cleared.

“Can we talk?“ The open door is a suggestion. Tim won’t have this discussion in front of everyone unless Jason makes him. (He really doubts Jason wants to, either.)
robintohood: (Goodbye to my enemies)

[personal profile] robintohood 2023-04-17 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Jason seems unconcerned when Tim asks him. He had a feeling at least a couple of his siblings were going to want to have private conversations with him after the bigger meetings about the worms. Tim was one of those siblings Jason anticipated. They've known each other for about a year now that he knows Tim would prefer to know plenty of details about certain situations.

"Yeah, fine," he replies simply.
mostdangerousbird: (125)

[personal profile] mostdangerousbird 2023-04-18 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, good. They’re in agreement that the conversation can happen. At least that much won’t be a fight, but Tim has only the time it takes to head into the room itself to decide his next move.

(And it does have to be decided. It’s Jason. Telling him anything along the lines of you’re maybe an idiot is about as productive as Tim shooting his own foot.)

(This is because Tim thinks Jason needs more friends, isn’t it?)

“So, if I’m understanding all of that properly, you’re protected from the Starro-worms because Sleeper - the self-identified alien cat - bonded a small piece of themself to you. Which connects you to a hive mind that we’re supposed to not be alarmed about?”

Tim would like it on record that he is being remarkably calm here.
robintohood: (I am real and the pretender)

[personal profile] robintohood 2023-04-18 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
"Yep," Jason replies in a tone that's probably too casual given the topic at hand. "It's a part-time bond and I haven't really tapped into that hivemind yet. There hasn't been a reason for it so far."

He knows Tim's mad. What Jason's done with Sleeper without telling the rest of the family seems to fly in the face of Bat-level preparedness.

"I wouldn't let them go swimming around in my fucked-up head if I didn't trust them," he continues.
mostdangerousbird: (078)

[personal profile] mostdangerousbird 2023-04-18 12:57 am (UTC)(link)
“A part-time bond?” Tim’s skepticism doubles at the word choice. He catches himself from immediately launching into a debate, because Jason’s acknowledgment of his own fucked-up head is a reminder to tread lightly. Doesn’t give him a pass, but the fact that he’s perhaps forging a real friendship earns him some slack.

Still. “Bonds aren’t considered transitory or part-time. You’re letting someone into your head, not buying them a coffee.”
robintohood: (I have my flaws)

[personal profile] robintohood 2023-04-18 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
"And a symbiote bond isn't the same as a human one," Jason calmly retorts. He hears the doubt in Tim's voice. He knows the third Robin thinks he's making a serious mistake. "Some symbiote stick to their hosts 24/7. We prefer to be separate whenever we feel like it. We're in the weekly platonic date night phase of this, not living together."

Maybe sometimes more than weekly but Jason's serious about the intensity level of his bond with Sleeper.

“I have a platonic roommate,” Tim replies, “and there’s no point where he gets a direct access to my cerebrum. Thank god.”

The whole concept of a hive mind is abhorrent to Tim. He’d hate it. He wouldn’t be able to stop thinking about all the things he didn’t want the other person to see. This is why he didn’t qualify to pilot those mechs, in the summer. He couldn’t do it. “What do you get out of this?”
robintohood: (And perfection)

[personal profile] robintohood 2023-04-18 01:48 am (UTC)(link)
"What you get out of any friendship or romantic relationship," Jason simply says. Before confessing to Sleeper, it had taken well over a month for him to try to work out what he feels about the symbiote. Even now, he still struggles to describe it. He knows it's not romantic but this isn't like any friendship he's ever had. It's more intense.

With how deeply personal this is, like hell Jason is ready to explain to more people.

"Symbiotes just happen to do a special kind of bond too."

Dana frowns when Jason says that he's immune, but doesn't go into details. Though, with the symbiote talk, she starts getting an idea. She has noticed that Sleeper's been spending more time on Jason's shoulder instead of just on the bar, but she hadn't thought much about it.

After the private meeting with Dylan, where he offered a piece of himself to inoculate his friends, she's pretty sure about Jason's source of immunity. And with his and Sleeper's behavior, even before the worms showed up, makes her think the arrangement wasn't made with protecting Jason in mind.

So instead of going home, she hangs around, looking for Jason. She can't keep herself from grinning as she does. And hoping that Sleeper's around, too. She wants to fully appreciate what them being together means.
robintohood: (Never gonna try to)

[personal profile] robintohood 2023-04-18 11:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Jason's a little tired as he's back at the bar, cleaning up. A lot of intel was swapped and the situation with the alien worms isn't over yet. Jason's also steeling himself for someone to ask him about him and Sleeper. He hadn't been actively hiding it but he also didn't want to make a big announcement about it. Bringing up his immunity though is bound to bring some questions.
qualityfriend: (sassy)

[personal profile] qualityfriend 2023-04-19 09:26 am (UTC)(link)
Dana's still smiling, though it falls a little when she looks around and sees no sign of a cat. She heads over to where Jason is and at least pitches in on tidying up before speaking.

"So. The reason you're not worried about the worms. Does it have anything to do with your book club buddy?"
robintohood: (And a soldier)

[personal profile] robintohood 2023-04-19 12:04 pm (UTC)(link)
There it is. A corner of Jason's lips quirk.

"Now what makes you think that?" He says.

Dana knows a lot, maybe more than she should at the risk of danger. But that seems to be the hazard when you're BatFamily-adjacent.
qualityfriend: (heh)

[personal profile] qualityfriend 2023-04-19 12:11 pm (UTC)(link)
"We-ell, Dylan just offered a bunch of us immunity by giving us a glob of his own goo." She pauses. "That sounds a lot worse when I say it out loud.

"But you weren't one of them, and it didn't sound like Dylan had tried it on other people before. So you probably didn't get any from him. But he's not the only one with those powers, and you've always been pretty close to Sleeper, and even closer lately..."
robintohood: (I'm a poet)

[personal profile] robintohood 2023-04-19 12:22 pm (UTC)(link)
"What can I say? Sleeper's special," Jason says as puts away more glasses. "Why trouble Dylan with my immunization when I'm already pretty close to someone else with a hive mind."

They had decided to bond before they knew about the worms but now the partnership was even more important.
qualityfriend: (sassy)

[personal profile] qualityfriend 2023-04-19 12:33 pm (UTC)(link)
"Yeah, they are. And, well, I've been around you guys enough to know that you don't get close to others very easily. So Sleeper's even more special, to get even closer to you."

There's a hint of envy in her voice. Would Terry have let her in so much if they hadn't been dating before he started the job? But because of that, she can see how remarkable Jason opening up to Sleeper is. Jason, who is the reserved outsider even among the family of reserved outsiders.

"So, are you just doing shoulder cat, or have you two tried anything more dynamic, like Dylan's dads?"
robintohood: (To lose this higher)

[personal profile] robintohood 2023-04-19 09:57 pm (UTC)(link)
"As far as anyone's concerned, Sleeper's just a very good shoulder cat," Jason replies with a smirk. "We know our boundaries."

Neither of them have any intention of being as attached to each other as Eddie and Venom. They both like their independence too much to commit to their bond to that degree. But they were also willing to function as one whenever it suited them.

Dylan's exhausted to the point of being numb. He can't even seem to fake a smile right now, much less give a real one.

"I don't know," he mumbles. "I was scared for a while, but I guess I just... ran out of scared after a certain point. How am I supposed to feel?"
robintohood: (I don't want to be just a number)

Dylan is quiet for a moment. All of this being over feels so far away; It feels like it's barely even begun. His affect remains flat, and the only indication that he's thinking it over at all is his eyes darting to the left before looking back to Jason.

"Take a break from what?"

Maybe if he had more energy he'd have said it sarcastically, but apathy is all he can manage right now. When all this is over, he could take a break from... his penthouse apartment? His ridiculously high allowance? He has friends with actual problems, Jason included. What right does Dylan have to "take a break?"

"From whatever's keeping you from being able to feel," Jason elaborates. "Trying to keep a front all the time will burn you out."

The advantage of being trained by a vigilante detective is that one can read people extensively. Unfortunately, there's a reason why ignorance is bliss. It hasn't escaped Jason that Dylan's gone through a lot over the past couple of months. It has Jason worried.
