CONFLUENCE 017
Who: Everyone!
What: A Confluence! An invasion!
When: Early April
Where: Everywhere!
Content Warnings: Nonconsensual life takeover, drug use, death
➢ New arrivals will be appearing in Central City. Their arrival will be expected and handled by a number of local heroes, helpful magic, and a few drones–except all of them (sans the drones) will be feeling tired and a touch under the weather. What gives?
➢ Central City dealing with some pod people. Not obviously, of course, but this is a problem that metas of all types are free to investigate. How people choose to deal with them is up to you, but feel free to hit us up with any questions about this mini-event down below.
➢ Little Love has a … cow problem. Or a goat problem. It depends upon your definition of problem. It's time for the great cow strike of 2023. The goats are just passing the word.
➢ Sunset Falls had a ghostly problem that has now become a withdrawal problem.
➢ Excelsior is on its anti-meta propaganda again. There are some citizens from the city exploring other locations to see if they can spot some trouble. Central City seems like it's in some trouble–it would probably be best not to let the propaganda engine catch wind of that, huh? Pod people are just a different name for metas, as far as they're concerned.

ARRIVAL
A Confluence, capitalized, is the converging of one or more supernatural forces.
Wherever you were, whatever you were getting up to back home—it doesn't matter anymore. One moment you're standing, laying down, sitting, getting shot at—the next, you're falling. It's not from a short distance, either. The sky opens up, and out of it comes you. Maybe you've got the ability to catch yourself before your face meets asphalt, but if you don't, don't worry about it. The citizens of CENTRAL CITY are here to lend a hand. The thing is, some of them might find it difficult to control their powers. Many of them might keep you from crash landing, but you'll still fall and hurt your leg (if not break it). Their skin is pallid and they have dark rings under their eyes. Well, some of them, anyway.
Whatever way you've arrived, you're here now. Your saviors can't seem to focus to stick around too long, and just absently point out where you're going. That's right: you've been dropped off close to the DIADEM HOTEL and won't have to walk very far to get to your temporary housing.
Welcome to Central City.

Welcome to Central City.
DIADEM HOTEL
The DIADEM HOTEL is usually reserved for the obscenely wealthy. Its rooms are enormous, the beds quite literally enchanted to offer the perfect night's sleep, and the food would usually cost your life savings just to sample. But given the circumstances, the Guilds feel it's the least they can do to aid your transition into this world.EVERYTHING is complimentary, and everyone gets an ALLIANCE CREDIT CARD to spend on entertainment, clothing, and whatever other necessities they might need. The cards have an obscenely high limit and there doesn't seem to be an expectation for you to pay it back... though if they catch you abusing it, their accountant will be coming for your head. The employees here seem to be largely untouched by whatever's affecting the citizens outside–but that's probably because they know better than to touch some strange metas they come across.
There's a shopping center immediately across the street. It has an impressive array of outlets that cater to your every need. Food, clothing... and swords? If you can think of it, it's for sale. Although anything clearly supernatural or metahuman seems to be at a minimum and offered under the table. You can grab clothing made to withstand any superpower and a surprisingly mediocre Taco Bell order while you're at it. There's a Super Cinema in the shopping complex across the street that's showing ARCHETYPE 2: WAYS OF THE MOUNTAIN. It's a long, long movie about an alien species that needs to eat rocks to survive. While critically acclaimed, few people can summarize what it's about other than that it's a science fiction marvel for the ages. Not seeing it basically means you're not cool, but it feels like no one has truly seen it because no one even knows what it's really about.

CENTRAL CITY
Typically, Central City is a city of architectural marvels offset by terrible income disparities. Typically, the people here are aware of where not to go; they know which shadows to avoid, which neighborhoods to leave abandoned, and which pizza shops aren't likely to see trouble at all hours of the day. To the outside eye, all of these things remain true. Much of the city continues to be little more than a dilapidated shell of itself–a recurring reminder of what it could be if its citizens weren't afraid of its potential.
At the moment, Central City's citizens are feeling A LITTLE OFF, ALMOST AS IF THEY'RE BOTH IN STEP WITH ONE ANOTHER AND NOT. Why is that? An odd, new INVASIVE SPECIES HAS BEEN TAKING ROOT. That's right. It's pod people time.
To anyone observing the city, nothing has changed. But the people inside will undoubtedly notice the shift. A large number of people have been seen coming from the abandoned, forgotten parts of the city, dressed as if they're keen to return to their 9-5 job. The crime syndicates are keeping quiet; many of its members are fatigued and unaware, trying to go about even their most basic tasks like shaking down local businesses without feeling like they want to fall asleep on their feet.
That's the thing: CENTRAL CITY IS SAFER THAN USUAL because a whole lot of citizens are currently dead on their feet. Not literally–not yet anyway. At first this might seem like a blessing in disguise, but all of the strange behavior is likely to add up. What does this strange behavior look like–and what comes next?
➢ Right now, no one knows that there are pod people, and–in fact–that they have been quietly taking root for a while. A large part of this is because they're difficult to spot before they fully absorb an identity. Think of an ability that makes it hard to focus on someone–that's what's going on with them. As a group, they have a simple cellular structure and seem to have a central nervous system that they share. Yep, it's a hivemind folks. Now–where is that hive?
➢ As a species, the pod people are symbiotic in nature. Their "barely noticeable" forms are only illusions; their true form, at birth, is parasitic and worm-like in nature. They insert through someone's skin and begin to take root, sucking away at their energy bit by bit until they can begin to take on a life of their own. They quite literally form a new body near the hive and hatch out of it. Once they hatch, their host body will begin to wither quickly and die, as its memories and energy are no longer needed. Once they take on this form, they are able to sustain themselves away from a host.
➢ They absorb all aspects of someone's identity: their appearance, their quirks, their memories, and everything else. One might even ask if THEY ARE NOT TRULY THE PERSON THEY TOOK OVER WHEN THEY'RE DONE. Everything about them is the same, after all–EXCEPT FOR A NEED TO CONTINUE TO SPREAD NEWLY BORN PARASITES FROM THE HIVE TO OTHERS VIA TOUCH.
➢ The process of the takeover happens in six steps:

➢ The process of the takeover happens in six steps:
1. INFECTION - the symbiotic parasite is passed via touch
2. ENERGY DRAIN - the parasite begins to take root, causing fatigue in its host
3. MEMORY LOSS AND DISASSOCIATION - there is an odd sense that someone is in two places at once; in addition, it's hard to recall facts about themselves and the people around them
4. HIVEMIND AWARENESS - there is always a sense of power nearby in Central City, as well as safety–there will also be telepathic awareness of other hosts who are at this stage
5. COMPLETE TAKEOVER AND LOSS OF LIFE - the original host begins to wither into a husk, begins to die
6. REBIRTH - the new pod person is born and they are autotrophic in nature: small parasites can be passed from their body, always replicating so that they can continue and spread

➢ COMPROMISED METAS WILL FIND IT DIFFICULT TO ACCESS THEIR POWERS RELIABLY. When the new pod person is born, they will be born with the power that their previous host had.
➢ STOPPING THE POD PEOPLE IS AN OPTION. So is SAVING THEM. No matter what, some investigation into what they are, how to manage them, and if they're truly harmful is needed. After all–being a part of a hive mind might actually not be so bad. It seems to have helped Central City.

boy with a coin, girl with a knife
kell isn't here. he is back in white london being tortured probably while rhy is clinging to a half life in red london with only lila to save them both and she's failed.
her hand curls around the magic box, blood welling against the cut on her wrist. she has the box to guide her this time but it's still the memories that well up in her chest that fuel the power — the fury in his eyes before he stalked off, the heat of his hands on her skin, his lips against hers, the stranger tied to her bed with his many sided coat, the scent of lilies, the pain in his scream beyond that door. she presses her blood to the wall. ]
As Tascen Kell.
[ it works, the brick wall melting away, the whole world swooping off kilter before it rights itself again and she's standing... in front of a man with a knife pointed at her. the relief of the magic working bleeds away into another disappointment, the box falling from fingers gone lax to bounce against the asphalt. her knife is already in her other hand but what is the point? ]
no subject
well. kell's glad it's lila. he takes a step forward behind her, notices the knife in her hand and opts to trust her ability to guard them both for a moment. she's dropped something that looks plenty familiar, after all, and kell takes a couple steps forward to kneel down behind her and pick it up. he's careful to be slow with his movements, loud enough that she'll be able to pick up ever step, hear the moment he scrapes the box down against the ground before pulling himself back up to his feet. )
Lila. ( he says her name like it's a relief, because it is. this isn't his first new world, first time walking around somewhere almost entirely unfamiliar, or the first he's felt cut off--but it's different this time. it's unfamiliar in a way other londons weren't, he's cut off in ways he hadn't been before. lila is something familiar in an odd world, something that feels right. ) Don't kill him.
( this would be a bad place to leave a body. )

the birds up there mock me.
the one she's most comfortable with is rather anachronistic. stretched before her like a dowsing rod, or maybe an offering to some strange god, the little round screen on her farnsworth remains dark. the time it was born is nestled right between claudia's and kell's, looking like it might be powered by steam rather than electricity.
she's not experienced in the field. so when she notices kell's peeping, her body language immediately stiffens up with alarm. if she were a good field agent she might try to act natural, suss out what the guy's up to. instead, she makes the absolutely bizarre choice to hold the smart phone up for a selfie. her framing's terrible, as she tilts it the wrong way and takes the snap. kell is not in the picture at all claudia 0/10 you have failed. )
Keep staring, dude, I might do a trick.
( yes excellent that sounded totally confident. except when she turns to face him it's very obvious she's beyond freaked out and putting on a brave face. maybe he even saw or heard her at the fall site, flailing until she flopped out of her rescuer's grasp and breaking her wrist on impact. claudia doesn't exactly do low key, with all those patches and bright purple skinny jeans. )
sorry for the super delay!
instead, he gestures over to the phone itself with a hand. )
What is that?
( he's already gotten her attention, he may as well use it to his advantage. )
not a worry!

Flying out in the open doesn't seem like a great idea around here when one is essentially trying not to draw attention to oneself, however, so Donnie zips around between buildings, trying to avoid direct window levels in case he gives any bored office workers a heart attack when they inevitably stare outside and see a green turtle teen flying by.
He does not anticipate getting hit by a phone, which does the job of stopping him short from his aerial explorations.]

Dylan Brock + General TL for the Parasite Worm Plot
Mostly setting it up this way so we can all bypass the "how did my character get involved?" hurdle and just assume they already are, if you want. ♥ ))
--
01. Descendant - Private Room; CLOSED to close friends & associates of Jason and/or Dylan + Friends of Those Friends
01a. Apparently Dylan wasn't the only one to notice the worms. Jason and Sleeper seemed to have found out about them while working some kind of job together, though they hadn't disclosed what kind of job. Still, particulars aside, the worm situation sounded bad.
Now that they have some idea of what's happening, it's time to gather everyone together and compare notes. They've gathered their own family and friends, as well as the people they want to protect, too.
With everyone gathered together, Dylan pulls a glass jar from his backpack. Inside is a writhing worm of some kind, flailing against its prison and desperately trying to burrow into something. It's stuck fast, though, and nothing short of dynamite is going to break this jar open.
"So these are the things are associated with some kind of illness that's been going around," Dylan says, and he goes on to explain the facts as well as he knows them — the weakness, the memory loss, the weakened powers.
Jason supplements what Dylan says with what he knows, and at that point it's an open forum for everyone to comment what they've know or question what they don't.
-
01b. As the conversation goes on, Dylan looks like he has more to say, but he's... afraid. But finally, he gathers his courage, and decides to add the... extra insight he has.
"This whole thing is more complicated than it looks, though." He glances around. "I... don't think I've ever openly talked about this, but me and Sleeper share a... it's not exactly a hivemind, but a hive. And we can communicate with each other through it. Venom was part of it, too, while he was still here."
He shifts uncomfortably. "And the reason I bring this up is... I think these guys —" He taps the jar, "— are part of some kind of hivemind, too. I don't really know how these things work, but it's as if the signals are getting crossed. Like when you pick up two radio stations at once."
For a moment, he thinks maybe that's enough for everyone to put it together, so he doesn't have to openly admit just how similar he is to the creature in the jar. But... no, it's best to be clear. So he decides to spell it out.
"I can hear them sometimes. Except it isn't hearing, exactly. But I can catch some of what they're feeling, if I concentrate. They're Starfallen, just like we are. And they're lost. Confused. I... I don't think they understand what they're doing."
-
01c. - CLOSED to Dylan's Friends Once the meeting adjourned, a handful of Dylan's friends stayed behind so they could chat privately in one of the smaller rooms — with Jason's blessing, of course.
Dylan wants to try and see if he can extend his immunity to his friends, and only wanted to do so with an audience he trusted.
After some careful practice and willpower, Dylan managed to split a bit of ooze off himself. It was a small glob, about the size of a jawbreaker, but hopefully he wouldn't need much.
It's... weird. There's no other word to describe it.
He can still sense through it. Multiple sets of eyes and ears via tendrils had already been alien and confusing; this just addsanother layer of complexity to it. He just hopes that after it bonds with his friends, it won't be too intrusive to either of them.
Otherwise the foreseeable future would be a sensory nightmare.
"Okay, so I've... never done anything like this before, but maybe with this I can prevent the worms for you, too. They didn't seem to want to infest me, I think because they sensed another... thing in there already."
He holds up the small glob in one hand, offering it to his friends.
"So if you let this little piece of... me bond with you, it might prevent the worms from digging into you, too. This is only temporary, until we've got a more permanent solution to the worm problem."
At least, he hopes it's temporary.
"Who wants to go first?"
--
02. Unspecified laboratory — If you want to claim it as your character's lab, go for it! — OPEN to any science-y types who'd like to participate
02a. Dylan leans on the table, resting his chin on folded arms as he stares into the large, sealed glass tube. Inside, a handful of those... worms are writhing, desperately trying to burrow into something. Into someone.
He's quiet as the scientists work. He's not sure he has anything academically he can contribute, but he's making himself available in case they want his insight into their hivemind — or, perhaps if they need to run tests on something... similar.
Dylan still feels a little sick and afraid at the knowledge that he's similar enough to these things to be able to hear him. If everyone decides they're an enemy... what does that mean for him? For Sleeper?
He doesn't voice these concerns, though. Not right away, anyway. He sits quietly, lost in thought as the scientists hustle and bustle around him trying to run tests on the worm and find out more about it.
-
02b. But if someone glances over they might realize how distressed Dylan looks. How could he not be? This whole situation is causing an intense existential crisis for him. He might need some reassurance.
03a. The Descendant (several days later) - OPEN TO ALL - Town Hall Discussion
The largest room in The Descendant is filled with what Dylan assumes are some pretty influential folks throughout Central City. Maybe some of them are from the other Starfallen-heavy towns, too. He couldn't even begin to name them all — though there are plenty of folks he does recognize, too.
Regardless of who they are, it's clear they're all very concerned about the matter of the parasitic worms that have affected the city. Some are calling for a quarantine, others for an evacuation, and others still for an extermination.
For Dylan's own safety, he and the others they've involved so far haven't disclosed his... connection to the worms to the rest of the general public.
Yet even with that information kept under wraps, he's not sure how safe he feels. He's grateful that the meeting is being held here — where Dylan feels safe. Where Dylan knows exactly where to escape to if something goes sideways.
Dylan's sitting on a table on a far end of the room, not really participating, but definitely listening. This discussion concerns him, too, whether he likes it or not. Even if he didn't discover that he can tap into their hivemind... if the worms are deemed a threat that needs to be eliminated, how long before those attitudes are turned toward symbiotes?
He watches quietly, trying to focus on quelling his terror. Trial and error has revealed to him that the people bonded to his offshoots can get a sense of what he's feeling; Hopefully he's got enough of a handle on it that it's not bleeding over to his friends.
Or showing all over his face.
-
03b. Another call for extermination, and Dylan can't take it anymore, fear be damned. He stands up, and the speaker he's addressing stops talking and stares at him.
Everyone's staring at him.
Shakily, Dylan takes a deep breath, but manages to speak. "They're... they're Starfallen, just like a lot of us in here," he starts, looking around. "I just think... we shouldn't start killing Starfallen who become too inconvenient to have around." He swallows. "I don't want to set that precedent, you know?"

The little ball of goo doesn’t look much better than the worm. And it’s Dylan? But.. not all of him. And it would bond with them, like Venom did with Dylan’s other dad.
But it’s Dylan so it’s weird. “Venom didn’t like me. Your little blob won’t either.”
Re: 01c
But he gets why Nico's uncomfortable with the idea. Hell, Dylan's a little uncomfortable with the idea. He's never done this before. He's got some idea of what it's like to be tapped into multiple minds at once — billions at one point — but those were mostly strangers. This is people he knows.
"I'm not going to make you or anything. But the way Jason described the late-stage hosts of the worms... it's pretty fucked up. You're one of my best friends, Nico, and I don't wanna see that happen to you."

What was supposed to be simple reconnaissance on the D'Amicos' remaining bases had quickly turned into something potentially more serious. After quickly warning Dylan, it became clear to all of them that they needed to tell more people. So here they were, sharing intel with each other and trying to work out a plan.
Throughout it all, Jason's also well aware of a question he knows his family is going to eventually ask. How has he been protecting himself? It's not as though Jason was actively hiding his bond with Sleeper. It's just that he didn't feel beholden to tell everyone right away. It felt better that it came up organically instead of him or Sleeper making a big announcement out of it. Talking to Dylan and Ripley for their approvals was different. A symbiote family isn't like a human family.
After all the intel has been shared, he looks at the rest of the room expectedly for questions.
Checking on Dylan (After the 03a prompt):
Well that meeting was... a lot. Jason's been worried about Dylan for a while now. Eddie and Venom leaving was difficult to handle. Then there was the teenager's anxiety after Jason and Sleeper talked to him about being bonded. As if that wasn't enough, there was Dylan seeing Huvrye shot and dropping into the attic safehouse, which in turn was a scene too similar to when Hunter got shot. Now there were these worms who needed guidance and Dylan trying to confront the fear and anger from other Starfallen.
This is a lot for anyone to handle and even worse for a teenager. After the meeting and when most people have left, Jason pulls Dylan towards the stairs leading to the attic.
"How're you feeling?" He asks.

But the deal is supposed to be that, if it’s something major, please give Tim a heads up so he can dream up five contingencies and thus be prepared for chaos. It doesn’t have to go further than him. He didn’t tell anyone about Kon’s potential human DNA donor.
(Until it blew up in the Teen Titans’ faces, so perhaps not the example to lead with.)
Tim waits until he can catch Jason in the hallway returning from and bodily blocks the path to a private room nexts to the open door of another private room that he’s cleared.
“Can we talk?“ The open door is a suggestion. Tim won’t have this discussion in front of everyone unless Jason makes him. (He really doubts Jason wants to, either.)

After the private meeting with Dylan, where he offered a piece of himself to inoculate his friends, she's pretty sure about Jason's source of immunity. And with his and Sleeper's behavior, even before the worms showed up, makes her think the arrangement wasn't made with protecting Jason in mind.
So instead of going home, she hangs around, looking for Jason. She can't keep herself from grinning as she does. And hoping that Sleeper's around, too. She wants to fully appreciate what them being together means.

CLOSED to Sephiroth | Hivemind Shenanigans
Normally, the hivemind is just an open communication that he's barely aware of, periodically picking up communication from Sleeper. Tonight, he closes his eyes and tries to tap into it directly.
He remembers the way he followed the hivemind when facing off against Knull, and tries to replicate the path, following it like a stray thought. It's like constantly trying to remember something on the tip of his tongue, finding more details but never quite finding that satisfying conclusion.
Still, he keeps trying to dig, extending his reach. Who are you? What do you want?

But when some foreign presence brushes against his mind, he freezes. It's a feeling with an immediate association--the world of his doppelganger, the one who found Jenova. It was a fleeting sensation he never wanted to dwell on.
This seems... not quite the same. Not that knowing invitation, but a question. Still, he doesn't trust it in the slightest.
What is this?

Dana's still a little apprehensive, but she smiles encouragingly at Dylan and holds out a hand not long after he makes the offer.
"I'm game. It can't be worse than dying to the worm things. If I'm going to be part of a group mind, I'd rather it be one with friends."

Dana's mostly been quiet in these meetings. She's not a scientist or a seasoned hero, and her powers are not particularly useful. So she's mostly here to learn, not offer solutions.
Which means she hasn't been taking part in the debate about how to handle the parasites. Personally, she can understand the fear. But she also knows how Dylan's gotten involved, and how he can hear them and how they're apparently not malicious, just confused and currently unable to reproduce without killing people. She's been sitting near him, putting a hand on his shoulder when he's had spikes of anxiety. So when he speaks up, she has to back him up.
"He's right. While some Starfallen can't be reasoned with-" anyone part of Dylan's symbiote bond will get an impression of a clown- "-it seems like we haven't been able to try with the worms. We should at least make a real effort before doing anything permanent. And we should do it sooner rather than later, before the authorities get involved and make it illegal to do anything besides what they want." Which will probably be complete annihilation.

He takes her hand, pressing the little black glob into her palm. It sticks when he pulls away, writhing a bit until it gets absorbed.
Even separated, Dylan can feel a little sensation from it like a phantom limb before it bonds to Dana, and it's... weird. For a moment it feels like there's some kind of sensation at his fingertips, even with his hands completely free. Once it's absorbed, the sensation fades.
Mentally, he pulls back, not wanting to overwhelm her. "How are you doing?"
03a
Mayuko's focus is on taking notes regarding the worm's effect on human hosts and getting a sense of how aware the city is. What actions are being taken. If it's being passed as the latest monthly disaster. And most importantly, the spread over the past month. All of this, as well as the information Sephiroth brings back, will go to Loki. Between them, they'll sort out feasible precautions. Hopefully lowkey enough to not scramble the Central authorities.
She can be found on the outskirts of the main discussion, or viewing the captured worm-inna-jar in a more secluded location.]

01c /super late but hello
Regardless, Dylan's plan to include them all in his... "not a hivemind but a hive" sounds... Well, Leo doesn't want to bring his personal shit into it except wow that is definitely very gooey and it's the wrong color but it's still gooey and it would let other people connect to him and maybe he's bringing his personal shit into this whether he wants to or not.
So when Dylan turns to him, Leo takes two steps back and collides with a wall. He's wearing his hologram disguise because he doesn't know everyone here, but his shell still makes an audible clack when he connects that sounds nothing at all like the clothes he's "wearing".]
Listen, I super appreciate the offer - really, I do - but I'm sorta good on any goo other than my own going inside my body.
[He knows it could help against the wormy things, which definitely seem like a bigger threat, but... does it have to be this way?]
(cheshire cat voice) "we're all late here."
and then I lost this whoop
01a-b i dunno
Hiveminds and alien parasites and what now? Sure, Donnie had noticed some odd behaviors amongst some of the humans but he didn't know that there was a whole layer of other stuff, which is concerning to say the least.
It's been an impressive feat for him to keep his mouth shut this long. He'd tagged along with Leo, but since he has no super cool holo-disguise, he's resorted to the usual with his hood pulled over his head, supplemented with a mask to hide the rest of his greens.
Ain't nothin' gonna hide those eyebrows however, and they are mighty expressive. In this case they have been transmitting all sorts of shades of disgust and uncertainty the moment that jar and its contents were revealed. While he might be a tiny bit fascinated, he's not too intent on getting anywhere close to it even though the thing is encased in a jar. Its incessant attempts are nothing short of concerning, and it prompts him to step a little closer to Leo Jitsu Splinterson.
Dylan's explanation makes weird sense, or at least Donnie seems to follow it well enough. The implications that if it wasn't for the existence of these other sorts of...entities? He's not sure what to make of the other kid. -then it's possible no one would have known they were potentially being invaded by parasites. Although the revelation that they're...well, that they arrived the same way as the rest of them have... That does add another layer of complication.
"Soooo...this is all kinds of unpleasant." Understatement of the year. "I know you mentioned the side-effects of...exposure," he says as his eyes slide towards the worm in the jar. "But what is the ultimate outcome if these th- these guys are...unattended to."
