I. One Man's Trash is Another Turtle's Treasure

It's always difficult to start from scratch. Difficult but not impossible. More annoying than anything else, really, but certainly not impossible. Having been at square one before, Donnie at least knows what he's in the market for and has a pretty good idea of where to look.

Well, so to speak. He's still relatively new to Central City but finding a junkyard isn't difficult when you have access to the internet!!!

Dangerous? Maybe. Profitable? Hopefully! Either way, the turtle is not planning to go back to the apartment empty-handed. He heads out early since it's easier looking through things when it's daylight, and in his experience junkyards are usually pretty devoid of visitors. Usually.

Purple may not be the most inconspicuous thing to wear but at least he's pretty good about being quick and quiet as he sneaks in.


II. Location, Location, Location

It may be disgusting but the sewers are nevertheless the perfect place to hide and get around in the city. In this instance Donnie's looking more for a hideaway than means of travel, but either way, it's still very clear to him that these aren't the same sewers as he's familiar with.

Sure, Leo had said he'd help look for places, but with excess free time and a lot of the projects he wants to work on hinging on finding a better place to do so, Donnie figures it can't hurt to do some location scouting too. Anyway, he's a ninja. He can take care of himself..!

The turtle errs on the side of caution for his sewer spelunking activities. The way he enters is never near the area he wants to check out, most of his traversing done underground as he scopes out tunnels branching out from the heart of the city. Of course, he's only one turtle, and while the sewers here probably don't run into abandoned subway stations or a maze of forgotten tunnels like New York, it's still a lot to poke around.

He's also unused to the idea that maybe there are other parties possibly interested in moving unseen in the sewers.


III. Alien Skylines

If someone's keeping an eye out some evenings, it wouldn't be terribly hard to spot the strange neon violet flares as something zips up along the length of one of the taller buildings.

Central City will never be New York. That's been established early on, but it still manages to make Donnie homesick every time he manages to get a good view of the cityscape from above.

The rooftops aren't exactly quiet but they allow just the right amount of ambiance that you can still think about things without a sensory overload. And there are a lot of things to think about. How to sneak into school of all things, how to not potentially short-circuit your own brain by accidentally plugging into computers somehow, how to unravel this Confluence nonsense, how to get your brother home safely... The list just grows and grows.

If Donnie's not leaning against the ledge staring out at the rest of the city or suspiciously eyeing the skies for any signs of raining people, then he's settled against a wall, messing around with his phone or tapping at a projected interface over his left forearm.

It was kind of a . . . wrong place, wrong time sort of deal. I was just a guy on Earth and an alien handed me a ring.

And like that, I was a Green Lantern.

Whoa... -is that seriously how you ended up with the position? [An alien just hands these things out? What.]

Although I can see how suddenly being dropped with that kind of responsibility when there are other things going on can really make you question that kind of decision.

In his defense, he was desperate.

[ "you'll have to do." not exactly winning words for his self-esteem. and for a long time, it had really bothered him. not being chosen, not being good enough. constantly compared to the legends of the past.

now, with more experience by his side, he's learned not to care so much. or least, know what his priorities are. ]

And it was rough. I didn't even get an instruction manual or a mentor. Just had to . . . figure out for myself.

No~t that that makes it sound any better...

I'm well familiar with the whole 'figuring things out for myself' thing. Seems like things worked out for you though, right? I mean, you're still going by the Green Lantern so I figure that's a heavy indicator at least.

Yeah. Can't quite give it up.

[ not after alex. alex, who so believed he could do it. ]

You didn't have help? Friends, a mentor?

[purplexing]

Sounds kind of willpower-reliant to me...

[Donnie starts setting things aside as he dismantles things further now that what he's looking for is freed from the car.]

Not really. I mean, father taught us some stuff, had a few pointers for some things from family, but mostly I just learned on my own.

[torchbearer]

[ huh. a little different from the story, then. that explains the reluctance, at least. ]

Must have been rough. Is that why you're scavenging?

[purplexing]

Eh, we've managed. Scavenging's part of it, yeah. It's just what I'm used to.

In this case- [He yanks another part free in emphasis] -it's just stuff to keep me busy.

[torchbearer]

Okay.

So definitely not something that'll blow up, right?

[purplexing]

[The softshell stops to glance back at him again.]

Wow, you are really stuck on this thought that I am going to blow something up, aren't you?

[torchbearer]

You are getting parts in the middle of the night.

[purplexing]

...point.

[Donnie pouts a bit at that before turning back to his work.]

Not like I can go shopping for a lot of these kinds of things. And clearly no one's using any of this.

Anyway, it's like I said. This is what I'm used to.

Well, just be careful. I don't know how those Alliance or Society people manage stuff here.

[purplexing]

Don't have to tell me twice.

[He supposes he can appreciate the warning anyway. Although that makes him wonder. Donnie slides another look back at him.]

You're not with them? [Alliance, anyway. The guy had said he was a superhero so it'd probably be the better fit if he was.]

[torchbearer]

Nope. Unaligned. I'm not big on becoming any kind of guild or government stooge.

[purplexing]

[That...has Donnie breathe out a sigh of relief. Sure, the guy could just be saying as much, but on the other hand it's refreshing to actually meet someone else who shares that opinion.]

Yeah, I'm not buying into any of that either.

[Some of that earlier tension finally eases from his shoulders as he goes back to dismantling things, setting the parts he's keeping aside. He tips his goggles down to double-check the make-up of the components. It's a lot of trouble for some pieces making use of titanium alloy but he figures he was lucky enough to find a car with such parts still intact at all. If he found one with a titanium frame it would make things so much easier, but he'll take what he can get.]

...registered?

[torchbearer]

[ he shakes his head. ]

No. Nothing like that. I'm not interested in any kind of registration or guild.

[purplexing]

[Donnie pauses what he's doing. Sure, he's figured there'd be others who weren't interested in guild politics and might be others who had escaped registry somehow but he hadn't met too many people yet to know.

It's both strange and relieving to finally come across someone who says as much.]

Me neither. Although I guess I kind of skipped out on accident, but the whole registry idea sounds pretty suspicious to me.

[torchbearer]

Yeah, I don't think any good will come out of it.

[ even if the green lantern corps is a corps, they were never stringent. or at least, not with kyle. ]

[purplexing]

Agreed.

[With a sigh, Donnie gets up to circle the car, if only to retrieve a backpack he'd left on the other side of it, along with the hoodie he'd been wearing earlier. He tugs the latter on before dropping down to start putting car parts into the former.]

I can see why they'd want to keep track of things like that, but it's still kind of ridiculous. And it's not like we asked to be here either.

I guess to them we're kind of like aliens. And Earth has a so-so record on those.

[ it's not always sunshine and roses. clark could tell stories. and had, actually. ]

[purplexing]

[That just makes Donnie think of what Leo had told him, of their own alien invasion back home that Donnie himself hasn't yet experienced. The thought make him shiver.]

...yeah, guess that's a good point.

[Standing up again, he wanders around to eye the exhaust pipe of the car. ]

Hey, if you're going to just sit there, you mind lifting this car up? I needa grab one last thing.

[torchbearer]

Sure thing.

[ he generates a hulk hogan who easily lifts the car up for donnie. ]

[purplexing]

[Really? He rolls his eyes before giving a shrug. It's getting the job done, so he can't complain. Well okay, he can, but he has better things to do. Like conjure up some mystic-tech lasers so he can make short work of what's holding the exhaust system in. He'd been trying to keep the flashiness to a minimum, but talking with the Lantern's let him loosen up a little. Well, that and he'd rather not spend all night doing this.]

Hm. This might actually be enough...

[It might seem a waste as he breaks up the pipe and its extensions, but they'll be more manageable this way. He waves a hand at the glowing green wrestler to indicate he's done as he starts packing away the rest of his salvage.]
