a room unlike those in arcadia. it's all golden with red drapes and torchlights. even the view from the windows seems starry, unlike anything on earth. and there's loki, dressed in a black suit, tapping his foot impatiently. ]

Any sense of what kind of meeting wouldn’t be suspicious around here?

How secure is the technology in this place?

( excelsior had seemed advanced, but that cuts both ways — natasha has no faith that communications won’t be intercepted and it’s an entirely new system she’ll have to learn. )

I would not trust it. One of the Metas did create a safer private network named WOMbat. I suggest you familiarize yourself with it as soon as possible.

As for this illusion, it is secure. My powers interfere with any radio and video equipment.

( sounds fair enough — that's what she'd do, if she'd wanted to keep tabs on everyone. monitor the technology, see who was up to what. )

That's convenient for you. Why do they want to keep you locked up so bad?

I'm the Mayor of Sunset Falls. I have influence and I've been mitigating the Alliance and Society's influence in my town. Metas are safer there. Less prone to discrimination.

When I got attacked via a bomb blast, I was compromised and they took me away for my "safety".

[ the one rare time loki was too weak to truly protest. he could have killed them, but that would have looked terrible for sunset falls and everyone else. ]

So.. your influence there is undermining Fantastic's goal of convincing Metas the only safe place to be is here?

Correct. And they could not move against me publicly because on paper, I was also an Alliance member. I had not broken any laws.

You're a member of this 'Alliance'?

( pay no mind to the skepticism in her tone )

[ loki shrugs. ]

It was funny at the time and they sponsored my hotel and expenses.

And let me guess — Fantastic hasn't tried to bribe you yet? Or he did and you told him no?

He's never reached out to me and I never involved myself in Guild politics. That was the state of things for a while. Minor fluctuations, but nothing on this level.

( she can’t decide whether or not that jives with what she knows of him, so she doesn’t pursue it )

We’ll do small meet ups. Accidental run ins, that sort of thing. ( returning to the topic at hand )

[ hmm. ]

And the Avengers are not getting involved?

( she stiffens — it’s slight, a pull of tension around her shoulders, a twitch at the corner of her lips. more than she’d have betrayed when they met years ago, but the sort of thing a normal person wouldn’t notice. )

This isn’t our fight. ( that’s easier to stomach than what avengers? )

[ it is odd to see romanoff's transparency. unnerving even. change is the only constant and loki isn't fool enough to believe even the avengers would remain the same forever.

and yet. romanoff's the only one loki ever had a passing level of grudging respect. ]

That has never stopped you before.

Is this because of Thanos or what Stark did?

( the dots connect in a flash — what stark did. how would loki know what stark did? (then again, this is tony, there are many what stark did situations that could apply.) face impassive, she stares at him for a long moment — weighs her words.

it’s none of his business. but maybe it is, since thanos killed him (allegedly). )

Let’s just say I’ve got bigger issues to deal with back home.

[ why hasn't strange told her? what sort of game was he playing? he frowns lightly. ]

Romanoff. I know you're still fighting Thanos. And the Avengers broke apart some time before.

You are . . . not yourself. What are you holding onto so desperately?

( she stills — almost preternaturally so. then, the uncertainty vanishes like it was never there, her half-smile wry and surface-level. )

How about this? We make it out of here without your knife in my back and I might even tell you.

[ that he finds unlikely, but he doesn't feel the need to pry. especially since he suspects he knows more than she does. and there's . . . a reason why strange hasn't told her the truth.

they are keeping her in the dark. deliberately. he's not sure he likes that. ]
