It is a fact universally acknowledged that October is a rough month; in a supernatural and magic-fueled town like Sunset Falls, that’s triply true. The various horror-terrors in the woods are extra-hungry, the ghosts are extra-temperamental, the kids are extra-rambunctious. What can be done?

One candy-seller, by the name of Randor, wants to make the October days a little sweeter. He’s opened a shop in Sunset Falls, and while his selection of sweets is still small, they are delectable. So delicious, people are buying boxes to surprise their households, bring to the office, mailing to family and friends out of state. “You have got to try this!”

But they are products of Sunset Falls. There’s a catch somewhere. Not always. But usually.

((OOC: Playing off of the TDM Prompt, this bout of Monster Mash is centered around Randor’s candies. We have four effect-entity pairings to pick from. The effects last three days unless tampered with/cured sooner. What flavor is each color? IDK, they're all yummy. 

RED: Effect: Passions run hot and hotter--love, hate, it’s all good.
Transformation: Firebird/Chimera/Salamander/Infernal/Fire-Aspected. Whichever you choose, touching you might cause burns.

BLUE: Effect: Personality/Ambitions make a 180-degree turn. The calm grow angry, the callous become kind. Motivated to drop who you are and leave it all behind, start anew.
Transformation: Banshee w/ death wail potential.

GREEN Effect: Increasing levels of covetousness over… a category of items. Whatever it might be, you gotta collect them all!
Transformation: Dragon. Might become more willing to take the “shiny” by force over time.

YELLOW: Effect: You’re inspired to sing about your heart’s desire. Your singing voice becomes AMAZING.
Transformation: Siren. Legged-merperson able to breathe on land? Bird-person? However you want to take it! You will be able to lure in and charm people with your voice.

Candy I. Sunset Falls

[There's an influx of magical creatures roaming the streets today, what's one more dragon? This darkish purple one is waiting for the library to open. She's craning up to the second story to speak with head-librarian Dolores, tail stiff behind her to keep balance.]

"Yes. Hello. I'll take the oldest tome you've got... no, wait. The oldest two... Of course, I'll bring them back!"

[That last part wasn't the most convincing. The dragon looks around for backup. Or for someone wandering by with a book. Maybe a resident, maybe a visitor?

Or maybe you see her in the park, flapping her wings and looking up at a big barn owl that is perched in a tree and screeching. Some kind of... flying lesson is going on?]


Candy II. Central City

[Sightings of a dragon in the area muster some concern, to put it lightly. She's not even that big! And it's not like she swoops to street-level... that often. Only when it looks like someone has an interesting book! Which they usually drop when they see her coming. How convenient.

During the day, she rests on flat rooftops, spreading her lovely collection around her; her dark coloring makes blending into the night a breeze, and she can see well enough to navigate around the tall buildings. Maybe one of the city's patrollers stumbles across her or gets called over to ask her to please move her scaly hide elsewhere. Maybe she soars across them-- hopefully not interrupting anything too important.]

[Sephiroth is arriving for work when he spots the dragon waiting for the library to open. He is, of course, carrying a few books because he's always checking things out for himself.

It's probably a good thing that he's been away from his homeworld long enough that he no longer attacks dragons on sight. Does he recognize that voice?]

...Mayuko, is that you?

[Hmmmmm? The dragon turns her head in Sephiroth's direction. She has length, rather than bulk; as she drops her forefeet to the ground and faces him, there is scarcely any sound. And it does sound like Mayuko, just more resonant. The sound does have further to travel, up a long throat.]

Yessssss, it's me. Transformation's hit me again-- twice in one year is a record.

[It seems like a lifetime ago. Back when she and Loki had just been elected. She shakes her head with a snort.]

It's not equivalent in scale... no pun intended... but I believe it still counts!

[He was slightly distracted by his fight with Loki at the time.]

Yes, I was... grappling with fresh information about the Battlements at the time. Quite forgot to see who else was affected.

[Mayuko in turn only learned because of Rue Moore. She flaps her wings, dark but for pale ribbing, and rearranges herself. After all, Sephiroth is carrying books. And she's quite interested in which they are.]

I wish I could say it was just an October repeat but... there's some enchanted candies being passed around town.

[Would she like to read about the history of wedding fashion or an introduction to Buddhism?]

I see. Then in this instance it works to my benefit not to have a sweet tooth.

Although... it must be interesting, being a dragon.

[Yes and yes! Delightful topics.

She's pointedly not getting in his space, but she dips her head lower. One of her energy whips pulls out her wallet from her pocket space, while a second sprouts tiny tendrils to rummage through her assorted cards.]

The culprit is an old man... or looks like an old man, who can even say. Randor, of the "Randor's Resplendence" shop in town. There's more than one type of candy, and he's very persuasive.

[At his second comment, her tail wags.]

A dragon's a larger form than an elephant, but also seems lighter. Fire-breathing is... touch-and-go but not uncontrollable. The hoarding instinct might become... troublesome.

Hm. I wonder if that is a part of it, or something you contributed. Not all dragons hoard.

[There's no speaking for other dragons, but Mayuko recognizes her friends! She can't help being excited!]

That's true. It must be influenced by my preferences. I don't know many dragons who'd hoard books. And yet here I am!

[To be fair, most of his interactions with dragons, historically, have involved killing them. Not a time for tail-wagging.]

Indeed, I wanted to beat all the other patrons here! But there is an issue I could not have foreseen.

[She looks pointedly at the door.]

It seems I am too large to fit. Not that I could have controlled my size, I believe. It does make things... tricky. And not a treat.

[Book theft by dragon in this day and age?! What's the world coming to!

Not...that Donnie is aware of this. He's got a couple of books under his arm, freshly checked out from the local library. Leo's card has been getting its mileage.

Stopping for some coffee is more or less a part of his library routine by now. Actually it's a good part of most of his routines whenever he's out and about the city, but it's especially enjoyable when he has some new books to get started on.

The weather hasn't gotten intolerable yet, and while he dreads whatever winters in Michigan may be like, he's going to enjoy just his hoodie-days while he can, taking a seat outside of the coffee shop, cracking open a book on bonsai trees.]

[Library books technically belong to everyone. Which means, in Mayuko's draconic perception, they already belong to her.

STILL, she is interested in what's been checked out. And if the... person? Happens to, oh, drop the books, she'll happily hold onto them. FOREVER.

From her perch on the library roof, she trails Donnie to the coffee shop. She's big and has dark coloring, there might be some notice by passersby this time of day. MAYBE.]

[It's hard for a dragon of any size to go roaming around without some response from the populace. Donnie's hardly going to look up for a few gasps, but screams in his general vicinity are a bit more curious because surely a hoodie-wearing teenager with green skin surely can't be that repulsive.

He's prepared to deliver a speech as he drags his attention from the book, but the closest people around are already in the process of pointedly vacating the area, and what few eyes linger to stare in fright aren't fixated on him, but something above.]

Huh?

[Very slowly he turns his face upwards, suddenly very reluctant to see just what all has caught everyone's attention.]

[The dragon's head that was descending closer, dark but for a white bony crest that resembles a mask, freezes in place. Maybe if she stays still, he'll go back to enjoying his nice beverage??]

[Whaaat is that?

Donnie squints.

...and who says he can't enjoy his coffee while trying to figure out just what exactly he is looking at?]

[The dragon blinks back. One of her fore feet digs a little harder into the building to keep her balance. There is something about Donnie that tickles her memory so she opts not to stay silent.]

What do you have there?

[Oh, that is ....a head attached to...ohhhh.

Donnie stares as the dragon speaks then. Oh. Okay. That...makes things easier. Just...act normal...?]

Uh....a vanilla macchiatto?

Interesting. And what are you reading?

[Okay. Dragon or not, he will happily talk about books.

Donnie seems to relax a bit at that, even offering a smile.]

Oh, just a book on bonsai cultivation. I was thinking of giving it a try, now that things are kind of quiet and the world isn't ending.

[The fact that this one isn't running away is also interesting. The dragon creeps down the side of the building, with a light thump as she touches down.]

Bonsai cultivation? That's a very... methodical sort of hobby. Not many youngsters take it up. Do you like plants?

[Having been about various yōkai back home, at least of the Hidden City-NY variety, a big dragon isn't really the strangest thing he's seen. Sure, she's big, but her interests are clearly academic!]

Oh I love plants. Aside from technology, botany is my favorite subject!

Did you go back to the past? With your brother?
