Happy Mog's Day!

What's Mog's Day? Well, it's not surprising you haven't heard of it, since it isn't an Earth holiday. It's a fall celebration marking the end of the season, before moogles enter their annual hibernation. A simple drawing of a moogle (a white, vaguely koala-like animal with small bat wings) was included in the invitation. On arrival, guests will be asked to don a large red nose, out of respect for Mog. The hosts are exempt from this, given they're the ones throwing the party and all.

Want a tour of the house? The hosts are not familiar with the concept of a housewarming party, but that's essentially what this is, and any of them would probably show you around if you like. They've just moved, but there's no sign of boxes. Rather, the bookshelves and decor seem a little sparse, their belongings having migrated from a smaller space. You may catch glimpses of a large orange cat slinking around behind the furniture. He has not yet adjusted to his new surroundings, and all the strangers aren't helping.

A catered dinner is laid out on the dining room table. (They can cook, they just... didn't.) There's also a chocolate cake waiting in the kitchen for later. It's for Loki; Sephiroth doesn't really care about cake.

The nearby back door leads out into the yard, and the fire pit. Arranged on a table are some materials one might use to create a simple effigy of someone you particularly hate. There's also a bag of marshmallows, seemingly as an afterthought.

"I... suppose there is some benefit to hearing it."

There is value in knowing others genuinely want good things for you.

Good, because if Sephiroth understands that then he's really growing from what David had known him for.

"I'll repeat it whenever I can," he says with a smile. "That's what people who care about you do."

"I don't think the frequency is entirely necessary," he says, because he's still Sephiroth. "I have a good memory."

"Affection should be displayed, not merely remembered," David says. "At least that's true for many people. I try to live by that. So the people important to me don't forget that I feel that way. So they know it hasn't changed."

"There is something to be said for restraint. A balance is required."

Yes, it is, but David thought he could probably err to noting it a touch more often.

"Balance is a vital part of all aspects of life. And finding it is important, yes."

Sephiroth lets out a quiet huff. "I suppose I'll just have to let you know if you've upset it."

"Which is the best sort of communication there is," he says with a smile. "I'm glad you'd be willing to say it."

"Of course I am. I don't lie to be nice."

This doesn't change with friendship status.

Of course David laughs at that. Because he couldn't imagine anyone less likely to lie to be nice than Sephiroth. How perfect.

"And I actually really like that about you."

[unkindled_madness]

"Even though it's contrary to social niceties?"

People have not always liked that in the past.

[helpdesk_hero]

"Social niceties are frustrating and often just useless," David admits with a shrug.

[unkindled_madness]

Sephiroth smiles. "I've often thought so. There is something useful in... a prescribed script of sorts, but only when dealing with strangers."

"Or in handling people you have less personal connections with," David agrees. "But with friends? It loosens up."

[unkindled_madness]

"Well, then one wants to communicate, instead of simply navigate."

[helpdesk_hero]

Exactly. David nods. Sephiroth's learned a lot.

"That's it exactly.]

[unkindled_madness]

"...I'm not used to being in such easy agreement with you."

David may be his friend, but they don't always see eye-to-eye.

[helpdesk_hero]

"Sometimes you just click on a topic," David says with a shrug. It's a rare thing, but when it happens it's easier.

"And mostly I try and be honest with you, rather than accomodating."

[unkindled_madness]

"I do prefer honesty. I would much rather you argue with me than lie to appease me."

[helpdesk_hero]

"Yeah, that seems about the type of person you are. And it's really fair," he agrees with a nod. It makes sense. A lot of sense. "Platitudes weren't something you were used to back home, were they?"

"Only from certain crowds, whom I despised."

Rich people at events he was forced to attend, mostly.

That's fair.

"I ran into it a lot. Administrators, teachers, adults who doubted that we could ever amount to what they did."

He shrugs because he's sort of done with people like those.

"...I wasn't doubted by such people."

He wonders which is worse. Others seem to enjoy praise and confidence in their ability, but he was raised with the expectation that he would be great because he was made to be great. He didn't really prove them wrong.

"But I didn't like them any better."

[helpdesk_hero]

"That's fair enough. People just expect certain behaviors."

And he shrugs it all off.

"I'm glad you've found your own pace here."

"I know many people balk at being removed from their home worlds. I would have preferred more choice in the method. But... it's been good."
