( i. grand opening — mingle and drinks )

[ welcome to the opherium. open to all metas, provided you’re up to the dress code. so make sure you’re dressed to the gills with your fanciest clothes or you might just be asked to leave. you’re ushered into a grand hall. there are appetizers like shrimp cocktails and little quiches placed on large tables for you to nibble on and champagne glasses being passed around by waiters. located in the middle is a large chocolate fountain for all you dessert lovers (loki. it’s for loki). grab yourself a drink and go hit up a familiar face. ]

( ii. dance dance )

[ and of course, once the mingling and networking is done, the staff come to clear the chairs away and leave plenty of room on the dance floor. the lights go dim, casting soft shadows against the wall. slow waltzes begin to filter through the hall as gently encouragement to go find a partner, maybe hold them close, enjoy a little . . . company and more.

or maybe you just want an excuse to step on someone’s foot. equally valid. in fact, there might be a little magic in the air that tugs you towards someone you want to be with . . . ]

( iii. star gazing )

[ the party is winding down. maybe you’re ready to go back. curl up on bed after a late night with drinks and dancing. or perhaps you’re feeling a touch of wistfulness, a need to seclude yourself after all that jazz. consider then, finding yourself a nice quiet corner on the upper levels of the theatre, where there are some nice balconies for you to collect yourself.

and there are always the stars to keep you company. ]

That sort of caution usually comes from experience.

[One must wonder just how effectively he abused it because David had gotten a serious wardrobe of his own.]

Too much experience. Back where I'm from there are people born with powers, instead of acquiring them or making things to serve as powers. And we tend to be persecuted for it. You grow up holding your breath when things are good, beautiful, wonderful even, because that's when things go wrong. You learn to love the good moments, but not expect them to last.

[And David had been happy, save for his fight with Josh and the kid Loki thing, for a while now. Add tonight's truly wonderful joy, and he's found himself anxious. Even what happened at the Expo doesn't ping as all that bad in the grand scheme for him.]

I'm sorry. There isn't anything like that in my world.

[ he finally steps forward, next to david at the balcony's guardrail. he glances over. ]

I don't know what life must have been like for your people, but I can empathize with that feeling.

[David adjusts the falls of his dress to make sure Bruce has no chance to trod on the hem, then looks back out at the night sky.]

Conflict. That's what it was like. I'm hoping to avoid that some here.

[ if only you knew the amount of women in long dresses he's been around at parties just like this one, david. he would never-- he's had quite the practice on proper form and etiquette from alfred. ]

Frances has said the same thing. But back when you offered me help in that diner, you weren't exactly avoiding conflict.

[Given he didn't know and he didn't have many gowns, he was going to be protective of it.]

Frances? I don't know who that is. And there's a difference between 'avoiding conflict' and quietly offering to help a detective find the right door to sniff around.

[There wasn't a connection between David and Prodigy as far as David had been able to trace, so he was mostly safe keeping his work going there.]

Is there? Someone could trace you back to me, if they really wanted to.

[ he looks out towards the city, eyes narrowed and focused. ]

You seem like a good person, David. If you really don't want to be a part of this, I wouldn't blame you, but if there's any part of you that looks out at the injustices in the world and can't sit by, then safety isn't always a luxury you'll have.

[David raised an eyebrow at that.]

Seriously, you intend to tell people you're using a psychometric for your investigations? I doubt that. I'll be fine.

[A good person, huh? He wants to laugh. He's a good person because he works hard at it. But he knows better than Bruce could imagine about that topic.]

You think I don't know that? I went to a school for metas, Bruce. And people attacked us for it. Trust me, I see the injustice, I know there is no safety. But I can keep the people close to me separate from what I must do.

In my experience, it doesn't work like that.

[ trust him, he does his best to keep the people close to him out of the things he does-- AND YET. ]

But I'm not here to try and lecture you. I think I'll just tell you that you're dressed too nicely to spend the rest of your evening out here worrying.

[David does smirk at that. He does have a wonderful boyfriend to go back to. Who has plans for him.]

I suppose I am. I should really do something about that. Thank you for speaking to me, Bruce.

[ if david looks back at the threshold of the room, bruce is already gone. one of his little disappearing acts. he'll do the worrying instead-- time to leave the party and go to work... ]

[David nods and turns to offer a sweeping bow, only to find no Bruce. So very, very intriguing.]
