What: Fancy Opening Night
When: May 11th
Where: The Opherium, Central City
Content Warnings: n/a
( i. grand opening — mingle and drinks )
[ welcome to the opherium. open to all metas, provided you’re up to the dress code. so make sure you’re dressed to the gills with your fanciest clothes or you might just be asked to leave. you’re ushered into a grand hall. there are appetizers like shrimp cocktails and little quiches placed on large tables for you to nibble on and champagne glasses being passed around by waiters. located in the middle is a large chocolate fountain for all you dessert lovers (loki. it’s for loki). grab yourself a drink and go hit up a familiar face. ]
( ii. dance dance )
[ and of course, once the mingling and networking is done, the staff come to clear the chairs away and leave plenty of room on the dance floor. the lights go dim, casting soft shadows against the wall. slow waltzes begin to filter through the hall as gently encouragement to go find a partner, maybe hold them close, enjoy a little . . . company and more.
or maybe you just want an excuse to step on someone’s foot. equally valid. in fact, there might be a little magic in the air that tugs you towards someone you want to be with . . . ]
( iii. star gazing )
[ the party is winding down. maybe you’re ready to go back. curl up on bed after a late night with drinks and dancing. or perhaps you’re feeling a touch of wistfulness, a need to seclude yourself after all that jazz. consider then, finding yourself a nice quiet corner on the upper levels of the theatre, where there are some nice balconies for you to collect yourself.
and there are always the stars to keep you company. ]

later, he can be found by the chocolate fountain, eyes wide in wonder or by the balcony late into the night, watching the people leave with a wistful smile. ]

billy kaplan-altman ( 616 )
he's needed the distraction. he loves his friends and he's glad he's not alone here, but it's just not been the same, obviously. and with recent events being what they've been, he's.. really struggled with his depression. it hasn't been this bad in a couple of years, and he very much would like to not worry anyone, so. here he is, and it's nice, really. he's impressed that loki's already managed something like this when he hasn't been there that long. goes to show what a thousands-plus year old god can do when he sets his mind to it, he supposes, and it.. suits him, he thinks? he doesn't know this one very well yet, but in his experience so far, lokis seem to enjoy drama, so a theatre seems like a natural fit.
throughout the night, billy can be found drinking slightly more than he probably should be. he's kind of a lightweight, so it's not long before he's a little tipsy and thus more prone to affection with people he's acquainted with.
he knows he shouldn't drink on an empty stomach, so he also checks out the food, and might be inquiring to see if any of it's kosher. he tends to play it a little fast and loose with his religion--space isn't known for its terran religious practices--but, you know, when he can eat like he's supposed to, he prefers to do so.
once he's tipsy enough, he might even be willing to approach someone--anyone, really--to dance, flushed pink and smiling even if he doesn't know them. just be careful, he's not incredibly graceful even when he's not drinking.
and as things are winding down, he definitely takes some quiet time, out on a balcony as he sobers up. he leans against the balustrade, red velvet coat draped over it next to him, dainty multicolored stars winking into and out of existence around him as he stares out into the evening. he's probably not even aware he's doing it, really. ]

Jason Todd | DC Animated Movies | OTA
But ultimately, Jason decided to give this one a shot. For the last two weeks he had to been trying to get to know Central City and understand how the place works. Much of it was like Gotham. So far, he had learned some things, met some people, and has even gotten an under-the-table day job as a mechanic at Fix-It All-Tow.
But Jason knew that if he really wanted to understand the city, he would have to dip his toes into all sorts of places. He couldn't just stick to the streets. So, he decided to take his chances with the Opherium after hearing about it. Plus, it's an opportunity to observe other metas.
Worst comes to worst, he could always just quietly slip away if he found the place unbearable.
The day of the party Jason was able to find a fairly decent suit (sans mask and umbrella) at a thrift store. The sleeves could be longer and there's a little too much space in the shoulders of the jacket but for this party, Jason thinks it's enough.]
Grand opening — mingle and drinks
[Jason's helping himself to some appetizers and is off to the side, little aways from the bulk of the crowd. He doesn't think he'll recognize most people tonight. In fact, probably no one.
Then again, on the first day he was literally dropped into this alternate Earth, there were already a couple of people who recognized him but not vice versa. So who knows?]
Star gazing
[Jason almost finds it miraculous he lasted as long as he did tonight. But now he needed some air. A balcony is a good spot for him. It's a clear night too. He's just looking up at the stars and looking contemplative]

Cassandra Cain-Wayne | DC Comics| ota
She still doesn't know much about the cost of a dollar, but her fashion sense has expanded over the years to where she can pick out a dresswithout someone else's input.
She'll either be convincing someone to get her a non-alcoholic drink or carrying around a full champagne flute until she finds a place to set it down. Alcohol goes straight to her head, after all. Chocolate on the other hand... When not getting a read on the people at the party, Cass can be found feeding her sweet tooth. It's one small indulgence she will allow herself.
The other indulgence? Dancing. Dancing has always been a favorite activity of hers, it doesn't matter if she's just watching or moving around the dance floor. What better way to watch others? She'll happily approach anyone who looks like they need rescue or are too shy to step out on their own.
Of course, it doesn't take long for her to finally need a place to run and get away from the crowd. While she'd prefer a quiet rooftop, a not so private balcony works just as well.]

Tim Drake | DC Comics | OTA
[ There's a solid three minutes between arriving at the Opherium and being escorted into the hall where Tim could have left. He, in fact, thought about leaving on five distinct occasions, including when he saw the ornate building that he can't afford to donate to in person, when he marked the smooth skill of the staff, and at least three of the guests made him think twice about attending due to their dress and/or behavior - or because he recognized them.
But it's a solid, open invitation to all Metahumans, and he doubts that those kinds of invitations are going to come around that often. Besides, he already bought the suit. Money only grows on trees for now.
He liberates a champagne flute from a passing waiter as a prop and squares his shoulders. Chin up, it's a few hours of smiling and people-watching. ]
iii.
star-gazingpeople-watching[ Nope, he should have left when he had the chance. How does Bruce Wayne do this all the time? Tim absolutely hates galas, and he is going to double-down on avoiding them whenever possible from now on. It's like a never-ending press conference with people who aspirate the h in the ha, ha, ha of their laughter, and it's always precisely three ha's.
Or worse, their friend who can't even manage to open their mouth for a vowel sound and the laughter is only a hm, hm, hm.
He can still people watch from the balcony, leaning backwards against the railing, but Tim's going to stay out here for a few minutes to get some air, as they say. ]
[ Dancing is an option, but he's not just going to walk to someone and ask for a dance. Wildcards also welcome. ]

Spock | Star Trek
[ Loki had told Spock that it would be appropriate to wear formal clothing of his own culture and though he'd considered a more human tuxedo, he'd ultimately managed to arrange for himself a more Vulcan ensemble made of black silks. It's much more comfortable but still feels formal to him and he believes it will not look overly-casual for this setting, either. He has completed the look with black gloves.
Mostly, he has come for the music. A cultural exchange of art is something that he can find both self-enrichment and quiet enjoyment in. The drinks do not interest him as alcohol has no effect on his biology, but the chocolate fountain gives him pause. He can't quite help the barely-there smile when he sees it, though he suspects he is the only one here who is looking at an intoxicant. ]
2
[ Spock is not much of a dancer and these dances involve more touch than he tends to prefer, so he spends much of his time in a quiet corner watching others sway. The music is lovely and there's something artful in watching the way people dance, some more in sync than others as a random pattern forms of stumbles, laughs, a stolen kiss or a new pair stepping onto the floor.
For a long time, he stays where he is, but when he spots someone by themselves nearby, he takes the plunge and approaches them with a gloved hand held out. ]
Would you like to dance? I believe I have observed long enough to follow the steps.
3
[ Later in the evening, Spock finds himself alone on one of the balconies. He has removed his gloves but holds them firmly in his hands as he looks up at the stars, elbows braced on the handrail. It's been a pleasant evening and he's even indulged in a little of the chocolate, leaving him pleasantly tipsy with his cheeks and ears flushed a gentle green.
He can hear footsteps behind him, but he doesn't turn around, instead reciting a familiar quote. ]
By being seldom seen, I could not stir
But like a comet I was wondered at.

Angela | Marvel-616 (CRAU) | ota
She is dressed in a stunning green gown, thinking that she ought to match the host's color preference for the evening, and spends much of her time on the outskirts of the action, observing. Any men who ask her for a dance will be rejected— the politeness of the rejection depends heavily on what approach the man takes to asking her— but any women who make an attempt will be greeted with a pleased smile, and Angela's offered hand to go out onto the floor. She will, of course, want to lead.
Later in the evening, she will have escaped to the balcony, leaning on the railing as she nurses a glass of champagne. She seems to be lost in thought, thinking of loved ones left behind in another world. ]

diana prince | dceu | ota
[This is the first time Diana has been in a crowd of metas that isn't the result of a recent Confluence, and she is excited. No haphazard powers, no giant potatoes, and no armor. And since she's lacking the latter, she's made do to meet the dress code. The Opherium is absolutely beautiful, and Diana wanders with a glass of champagne in one hand, marveling at the architecture and the beauty all around her. Eventually, she spots the chocolate fountain, and walks up to it, wide-eyed. She turns to the person closest to her and asks:]
What... is this for?
ii. first chance, last dance [dance dance]
[Diana is having a lovely time; this gala is much better than the last one she went to--she didn't even bring her sword tonight, though she did consider it.
She watches curiously as the tables are cleared away, the lights lowered. Then the music starts, and Diana's heart stutters in her chest. People start moving towards the dance floor, hold each other close, start to sway. Diana moves towards one of the few cocktail tables left, trying to get a handle on the sudden and deep ache in her heart. She might be convinced to dance, just give her a few minutes.]
iii. stuck in the middle [star gazing]
[The music fades to background noise as Diana makes her way to one of the many balconies. All she needs is a few moments to breathe fresh air, to see the open sky above her. She leans against a railing, tilting her head back to look up at the stars. The constellations aren't the same as the ones over Themyscira, but she knows they still exist in her own world, and there is a small comfort in that.]

doreen green | marvel comics | ota!
[ Oh god, this whole party is intimidatingly fancy. Doreen is a low-budget college student back home, so all of this ritziness is way out of her league, but she's done her best with a nice dress (modified slightly to allow for her gigantic tail!) and a short blazer - even the squirrel hanging out on her shoulder is wearing a satin bow to match the outfit.
She can be found lingering by the chocolate fountain, dipping various snack foods into it in the spirit of experimentation (chocolate covered pretzels: delicious!), and uncertainly holding a flute of champagne, trying to look like the sort of mature adult who regularly attends fancy galas and drinks champagne more than once a year at new years. It's pretty easy to tell that she's a little nervous, her tail is bristling. ]
Stargazing
Ohhhh my gosh.
[ Doreen flops back against the balcony railing, clearly exhausted from the sheer amount of fanciness at hand here (and also the champagne, she is not a big drinker!). The squirrel perched on her shoulder chirps sympathetically, and Doreen sneaks her another tiny quiche. ]
How do people do these things on the regular!
[ She's talking to the squirrel, but honestly, she probably just hasn't noticed you yet!]

dr. stephen strange / mcu
a) [ Sooner or later a familiar face becomes a balm in a sea of strangers, and he settles for a break in his networking next to a wallflower or somebody browsing the buffet. Doesn't matter if he knows them personally or just recognises them from confluences gone by, it's easier to relax with people whose circumstances you vaguely share. ]
Not a bad turn-out.
b) [ The frivolity doesn't stop at small talk. Once the tables are cleared and the music filters through the hall, Stephen shakes off surprise at but doesn't decline the approach of a woman he'd been speaking to at length earlier about the merits of magic and importance of a thorough magical education, planting quiet seeds, and from there the secret's out. He's not a half bad dancer, not at risk of stepping on anyone's toes, and not inclined (today, at least) to insist he couldn't possibly.
He's not making any requests of his own but he still seems to be taking to the floor more often than not, and since he's accidentally found himself enjoying the evening he's unlikely to turn down another name on his non-existent dance card if anyone were to want to cut in or lure him from the seat he's taken for a moment's rest. ]
c) [ The evening comes to a steady close. It's more intense socializing than he's done in -- years, and he steps out into fresh air with a smile still quirking the corners of his mouth, alcohol coursing a pleasant hum through his bloodstream and endorphins not yet spent.
But it's easy to get lost in lights and food and festivities. Out here, with the sky bright with little pinpricks of far-away stars and the air cooled by encroaching night, some of the gleam of the evening he's just spent slips. Hands settled into his pants pockets, Stephen closes his eyes and tilts his head back to feel the breeze on his face and share a sigh with the stars. ]
( Feel free to wildcard me with any other party things! He'll be there all night, mingling, dancing and being old and tired outside, so anything goes. )

loki did insist on all his employees being suitably cleaned up and dressed for the occasion. yusei doesn't particualrly care for dressing up, but he does care for having a job, so he got himself a simple black tux, you know. dress shirt, coattails, all of that.
except, you see, he didn't think about how comfortable he'd be wearing said tux while taking care of the lighting and such? because yes, he is considering himself to be on duty since he's on the premises. so at some point, the tux coat comes off, and it's just. it's just tied around his waist. like some shitty biker jacket. the shirt's slightly unbuttoned. he's rolled up the sleeves. you don't. you don't just do that with dress shirts, yusei. you don't
who allowed this.
anyways. he's like. around. looking more like he belongs in some shitty frat party than an elegant gala. the tired expression and glowing rainbow eyes don't help that at all.
what exactly is he doing, anyway? well. there's quite a few things.
you can find him bringing plates of food to the table, on occasion, when one of the cooking staff catches him instead of an actual waiter.
you can also find him cleaning up messes or taking away empty plates sometimes, as well.
and sometimes you can. er. see him up in the rafters, making adjustments to the lighting. you know, his actual job. or, well, maybe not see him, but you'll defintely see his waistcoat dangling from the ceiling, and then the glowing eyes, and,
god. ok. sure.
why did you hire this man, loki]

David Alleyne | Marvel Comics | OTA
I. Dancing
There's something to be said for the pleasure of dancing with people, whether he knows them or not, and feeling confident about the whole process. While David had come here as the candy on Balthier's arm, that hadn't meant he was limiting himself only to his boyfriend's companionship. Anyone who offered was quite welcome to take him for a spin, provided they didn't mind dancing with a man that, in heels, was easily pushing six three. And turned out there were more than a few that were down for such things, given there was going to be eyes drawn when you danced with a man in a scarlet dress with a very lovely gold necklace and tasteful gold and crimson focused make-up. All of which drew a touch of attention away from the citrine ring accented with stars and moons.
Had David worked hard to look good tonight? Damn right. Tonight was going to be his first time out beyond that one quiet date with Balthier where he wore a dress, and David was working hard to be confident with it. Let no one dare tell him he wasn't rocking it.
And, as one partner faded away with the end of a song, David stood to the side and took a few deep breaths.
"Well, this is the most fun I can imagine."
II. Star Gazing
It's been a long night, and truly magical. Wonderful. Perfect. Which was, in the end, what had driven David off to seek some privacy, which took the form of him finding a balcony. He leaned against the railing, trying to keep the dark thoughts away. And yet...
"You ever feel like a night was too perfect?"
He spoke up when he heard footsteps behind him. Perhaps it was a bit dark of a thing to say, but it's the mood David found himself in. Strange that here, in a place where he should be thinking about his boyfriend and the happiness Balthier gives him, he's instead worried.
Back home mutants had learned, far too many times, that being too happy meant something was going to go wrong soon.
III. Wildcard
[OOC: I'm down for anything, especially open for his standing CR who want to intercept him in the night but don't want to dance or wax philosophical. I will match tagging styles]

Balthier | Final Fantasy XII | OTA
Wearing a brocaded salwaar and loafers that remind him of home and a draping gold and red cloth he's very much looking his aristocratic roots. And, yes, wearing something no one else is was part of the appeal. As is matching David.
They're on each other's arms for part of the evening, but Balthier is too social to stay with one person, and David has friends here, and technically Balthier also brought Peter oops.
And he loves dancing, so if you ask him, he'll gladly lead or follow, or might even show you Ivalician steps.
II. Mingle
If you don't catch him on the dance floor, you will catch him with a glass in his hand laughing or flirting or talking. He might even tell pirate stories if you ask nicely.
III. Stargazing
As the evening winds down, he finds himself drawn to the cool darkness of the skies. Some oddity means that some of the constellations overlap here with home, namely the western zodiac, which both makes him feel comforted and a little homesick.
"Do you know what that one is?" he asks, pointing to one he doesn't recognize.
He'll also be delighted if you try to guess his zodiac sign. Bonus points for moon.

Kate Bishop | Marvel Comics | OTA
[There's too much black here. Kate is wearing purple, as always, and if she spent too much on her dress, that's a problem for the guilds, not her. She's used to these sorts of gatherings, so she fits in easily. Honestly, she usually hates them. Too stuffy, too much sucking up and a desperate desire to impress from everyone involved. But this one has a chocolate fountain, and there's no social climbing required, so it's winning some points.
Is she parking herself next to that fountain? Yes, she absolutely is.]
ii. dancing!
[So she's a little tipsy. So what! The aforementioned lack of social climbing or stupid family status to worry about makes that not matter at all. It also means that she can look for people to drag out onto the dance floor, encouragement or not.]
Oh, God, we definitely don't have to waltz. We're not eighty.

Godzilla | Godzilla: The Series | OTA
(It may come as a shock to some, but Godzilla doesn't often go to these kinds of parties. It's hard to imagine, with how lovable he is, but this time around is different. It's easier for him to navigate the city at his full size and he had to do some traveling to get enough stuff to resemble fancy clothes for a big lizard. Many people at the party may notice the kaiju's stomps as he pulls up in front of the Opherium.
The size change charm is a bit of a necessity, as it allows him to get through the door in the first place. It's easier to mingle when you're eight feet tall instead of three hundred. The big lizard tries his best to be fashionable with a top hat and a bolo tie that seemed like it could fancy him up. Close enough!
For anyone already in the party, Godzilla's curiously sniffing at the food, foreign to him as it is. It smells nice and all, but the chocolate fountain gets him staring at it for some time. Water fountains aren't supposed to be brown, right? Maybe it's broken and no one's noticed? Someone please educate him.)
II. Dance Dance
(Hey. Hey you, lucky friend. That magic in the air encouraging wall flowers to get out there and have some fun? The fates have decided that you're sharing a dance with a dinosaur. This is your life now. Sure, he's an inexperienced dancer, but a slow waltz is easy to pick up on after a little studying. And don't worry, he's taking extra special care to not step on anyone's feet.
On the plus side, he's got a great smile and great eyes.)
III. Star Gazing
(Now here's something Godzilla is familiar with. Stars don't really change, no matter where in the world you are, and he's enjoying that. The big guy's sitting on his haunches and looking up at the sky, giving what's apparently a brief sigh. He thinks about his home and his family regularly, but that doesn't mean his time here is meaningless. This has been a pretty pleasant afternoon and there's some great and very unique people he's met and befriended. They're important to him. He just has important people back home, too.
He can easily be found on the upper levels, easily approachable for anyone who needs some company or to check on a kaiju.)

jinx - arcane - ota
She looks uncomfortable outside of her usual choice of clothes. Her pants are looser than she is used to, while the choice of top is more her speed. The boots are definitely a mismatch, but they're comfortable and easy to run in. A clever girl is always thinking of a quick escape, after all.
She tries the chocolate fountain with curiosity and likes it. The shrimp are a revelation, while she can be seen making a face at the champagne. Too dry, and she hiccups after it. ]
It feels like wearing a costume. Still, she can learn. So she stands, mostly, by the wayside watching the different ways these people dance, or mingle, or even just talk. She observes the mannerisms, observes the snippets of conversations she can hear, and as she folds her arms and draws in on herself, she desperately misses the loud, heavy beats or the mellow blues of The Last Drop.
Idly she blows her hair from her face and reaches to grab a champagne flute from whoever is unfortunate enough to be passing by. She doesn't like it, but she likes the bubbly sensation. ]
She's never seen the stars so vividly before; hadn't known there were so many white dots across the black of the night sky. It sucks her in and even as the cold descends further to her skin, she finds herself grinning ear to ear as she begins to notice things like twinkling and the constellations - how they're all slightly different from what she remembers of home. ]

Darth Nox | Star Wars: The Old Republic | ota
Generally speaking, when it can be felt, symptoms wouldn't be that dissimilar to what you'd expect to hear about with a haunting: They can include things like the room feeling noticeably colder, sudden and inexplicable unease or fear, intrusive thoughts to fight/flee/hide, a sudden knot in the stomach, suddenly hearing unintelligble whispers that can't be traced back to specific person or place, etc.]
