( jason shifts his weight--moves so he's slouching in against kyle's side, only half paying attention to the tv now. )

Between the two of us, we might make half of a functional human.

Mm, yeah. Something like that.

( being functional is overrated. look at jason: he's running off of minimal sleep and still able to sit here and hold a conversation, which is clearly enough. )

We're gonna have to up the security on this place. Retina scanners are a no go, given, ( his hand raises, gestures up to his face--where jason's mask would be if he was wearing one. removing his domino mask to get inside sounds stupid. ) I was thinking biometric scanners on the entrances along with keyfobs.

( because normal locks are too easy to break into. )

[ kyle blinks. ]

How long are we staying here?

[reneger]

I'm keeping the apartment, even when we head back to NYC. It'll be handy to have in case shit happens and we need a secondary place for a while.

( usually he prefers his safehouses to be less... homey, but with dickie sticking to his side like a bad tumor, jason'd rather have something comfortable. )

Out of curiosity, just how many "secondary" places have you accumulated?

Here? Three.

( kyle's first apartment, the apartment he shoved kyle into, and now this one. )

I'm working on finding a West Coast place next.

I think at this point, you could become an overbearing landlord.

I had safehouses all over back home.

( because he goes all over. but-- )

Most've them are shitty condemned buildings on land owned by companies people won't look twice at.

Yeah, that's no longer the case though.

( which makes them significantly more expensive to maintain too. )

Weird as hell, honestly. I haven't lived somewhere this ritzy since Wayne Manor.

[ kyle doesn't say he misses it. because that's not what jason truly misses anyway. he doubts there's anything deeply subconscious about it. ]

Maybe it's just the way things have been panning out.

I've got you and Dickiebird now. ( with a small grin, that he presses in against kyle's hair. ) You could live in a condemned building just fine, but I ain't putting a kid in one.

I'm so flattered.

[reneger]

You're a big boy. You can handle it.

( the tower just came like it is, but the only reason he got this apartment was because a teenager bullied him into taking him home. )

[torchbearer]

Doesn't mean I'm thrilled about it.

[reneger]

You should be flattered. ( his tone is still--teasing, even if there's something else under it, too. ) I don't let a lot of people in my space like this. Wouldn't let 'em at all, if it was the places I'd spent years picking up.

[torchbearer]

[ kyle gives him a long look. it's quite clear that it's not flattery, but it's the game they play. ]

Fine. I'm flattered.

I mean it, Kyle.

( head tilted back to look over to him. )

I still haven't shown Dick the tower in NYC.

[torchbearer]

[ he blinks, surprised. ]

You haven't?

[reneger]

No, 'cause it's my space.

( the central apartment, the warehouse, everything in between - jason figures those are all free game. but the tower's not associated with dick, it's full of people jason'd met elsewhere, and he doesn't need to share it with dick if he doesn't want to. )

It doesn't stop being your space.

[ he doesn't quite grasp the weird boundaries the bats have because sometimes there's a complete lack and sometimes they're just . . . very tetchy. ]

[reneger]

It doesn't. But when shit goes south, I end up having to burn everything.

( trash every known safehouse, every license plate, every piece they can use to track him down on the off chance they decide it's worth the effort. he's spent enough time locked up already, and jason likes having someplace he's--relatively certain he can retreat to if he needs it. tim knows, but tim won't fuck jason over unless jason really earned it. dickie--is a different story, jason's still figuring that one out. )

And you know damn well they're all stalkers. Just 'cause I've gotten used to not being able to keep anything to myself doesn't mean I like it.

[ kyle shakes his head. ]

I guess I can't really understand it. I've always been on my own. I never got to live the days of the Green Lantern Corps, even though they're back now.

[reneger]

's not about being part of the family.

( because he gets what kyle's getting at. or at least he thinks he does--that avoiding sharing is because he's one of them. )
