[Open-ish] October Oddities

What: Various antics with Jason as a civilian and as the Red Hood

Content Warnings: Potential PG-13 level violence. Will edit if needed.

Civilian:
[Between running Descendant Bar & Lounge as a civilian and being the violent vigilante and crime lord known as the Red Hood, it’s hard for Jason to have time for himself. But somehow he finds a way to squeeze in a few free days every month.

After running several errands, Jason’s now relaxing on a park bench and reading a library’s copy of The Bad Seed. If one were to look at the bags next to him, he apparently bought some new apparel, tools, and sewing supplies. Come bug him]


Red Hood:
[Tonight, the Red Hood is well within his gang’s territory and busy with making sure things stay in order.

If you’re nearby, you might see a thug get defenestrated out of a dive bar and landing on the curb. Jason then coolly follows after him and cracks his knuckles. Two of Jason’s gang members also come out of the building to follow him]

We can do this the easy way or the hard way.

[Come enjoy the show?

Alternatively, instead of coming across the Red Hood committing assault and battery, you might see a rarer side of him.

He could be seen escorting a teenager towards a homeless shelter for youths. There's no threatening, dangerous growl to his voice as he talks to the kid.]

Cooking Lesson (Closed to Donnie):
[A lot has happened since Jason and Donnie talked about making a grilled cheese sandwich. Time travel, more new arrivals, a possibly new timeline…. These things happen, you know? But Jason and Donnie’s schedules have finally lined up for them to spend a morning making a grilled cheese sandwich. It should be simple enough, right?]

Might wanna take it easy on the laser.

[Okay, mostly simple]


Crime Lesson (Closed to Accelerator):
[As promised, Jason is going to teach Accelerator on how to be a better criminal.

Tonight, Jason is fully dressed in his Red Hood gear and perched on the rooftop of a store that’s closed for the evening. The meeting spot he and Accelerator worked out is within Backbreakers territory near a chop shop. Said shop’s lights are on and sounds of tools banging and whirring indicate the illicit business is open.

Jason isn't entirely sure how this lesson will turn out but it should be entertaining at least. He just has to wait for Accelerator to arrive]

[It's pretty clear what Donnie's opinions are on using mayo is by the face he makes.]

Let's go with olive oil.

[Jason snorts in amusement at Donnie's expression]

Noted.

[He puts away the butter and mayo and then turns on the stove to preheat the pan]

Not a fan of mayo?

[purplexing]

Mayo is fine, there is just a time and place for it.

[He folds his arms, leaning his hip against the nearby counter.]

I heard some places offer mayo as a pizza topping. I haven't tried it though.

[purplexing]

I have not come across it but I don't disbelieve it. People will put anything on pizza.

...soooo now what?

[robintohood]

You wait for the pan to get warm enough before putting on the oil. It doesn't take long.

[Jason then drizzles the olive oil onto the pan]

You don't need a lot. Just enough for the bread to not stick. The bread will absorb the oil's flavor too.

[purplexing]

How do you figure it's warm enough when there's nothing monitoring the temperature?

[Frowning, Donnie pulls his goggles down, watching as heat levels rise bit by bit and the oil goes in.]

[robintohood]

The oil smoking a little bit is enough to know. Some recipes you have to really monitor the temperature but simpler ones like this you can just eyeball.

[Jason pulls out two slices of bread]

Go ahead and start putting on the cheese. The cheese and bread will be cooked together.

[purplexing]

[He looks almost mildly horrified at the thought of 'just eyeballing' something like this.

At least he shoves his goggles back up to look less like a mad scientist as he looks for the cheese then.]

[robintohood]

[Jason’s a little amused by Donnie’s cautiousness at this step and lets him continue]

Most cheeses should work for grilled cheese sandwich but the classic is usual American or cheddar.

[purplexing]

For demonstrative purposes we shall stick to simple.

[He pulls out some good ol' cheddar to plaster neatly over a slice of bread.]

[robintohood]

You can do onions or maybe some other stuff when you want to be a little fancier. Just put together now and into the pan. The oil’s just about ready.

[purplexing]

What, you mean like, right now now?

[But they'll just fall apart and the oil is hissing at him.

Donnie squints at the pan even as he gingerly picks up the cheese sandwich, precariously between two thumbs and two fingers. He chews on his lower lip as he brings it up over the pan, simultaneously stepping away as far as possible as though he's expecting the thing to explode in hot oil at any given second.

The sandwich lands with a rather anticlimactic *splut* and a sizzle, which has the turtle breathe out a sigh of relief, job well done, all good here, nothing to worry about.

-except when he drops his hands, one brushes the dial on the stove and turns the fire waaaaaay up!]

[robintohood]

[Whoops. That wasn’t expected. Jason quickly grabs the dial and lowers the fire back to medium heat]

Well that’s new.

[purplexing]

[Toasted turtle isn't fun, and predictably, Donnie's throwing himself back in surprise. Thankfully Jason comes to the rescue, but just before he gets the fire down, part of it licks up into the pan and proceeds to happily set the rest of its contents on fire.]

Uh-

[robintohood]

[God, why. Jason shuts off the stove, grabs the baking soda and pours it all over the fire before putting a lid on the pan to finish smothering]

Seriously?

[purplexing]

[If he still had his old tech-bō then whipping out a fire extinguisher wouldn't have been a problem. Donnie's too busy staring as it is, wondering how everything went so wrong so very fast. He supposes applause won't make things better, impressed as he is at Jason's quick thinking.

Finally he manages a sheepish grin as he looks over at the other.]

My method's probably looking perfectly reasonable now, isn't it?

[robintohood]

Almost. I take back what I said about taking it easy on the laser.

[Which now seems safer for Donnie to use as opposed to a stove]

[purplexing]

I'm still of the opinion that a laser wouldn't be very effective for a grilled cheese sandwich unless it were properly diffused and its resulting heat distributed evenly enough across surfaces, in which case, toaster coils do pretty well in itself.

[robintohood]

For a basic sandwich, yeah and it definitely works when you don’t have much else. Not the easiest in cleanup though.

[purplexing]

This is truuue...

[Mental gears are turning.]

[robintohood]

[Jason recognizes that look]

And you’ll have the same problem if you try with a toaster oven.

[purplexing]

But who says it has to be a toaster oven...

What are you thinking?

[And is Jason about to regret this endeavor]

Something that generates enough heat but evenly so, with such components being separate or at least appropriately shielded for cleaning ease.

[He pats around his belt pouch pockets before pulling out a pad and pencil to start roughing out a design and jot down some notes.]
