[Today is both Tim Drakes' birthday. In honor of this, Descendant Karaoke Bar and Lounge is closed for the night for a "private event."

On the ground floor where the bar is and where there's the most open space, most of the tables and chairs have been pushed aside while some have been rearranged to accommodate the party. A taco bar is lined up on one side. Hard and soft shells are available, along with a variety of fillings people can choose to make their own tacos.

A projector screen has been set up in front of the bar, alongside a laptop loaded with a movie library.

The birthday cake is a coffee and chocolate ice cream cake with vanilla frosting. It's safely stashed in the kitchen's fridge until it's time for dessert.

Though this family is absolutely dysfunctional and its members don't all come from the same universe or timeline, they're going to make sure two family members have a good birthday party today. Jackass guilds be damned]

Figured. Dick wasn't around, and Tim forgets his own birthday when he's left on his own.

( jason just doesn't celebrate his, but that's different. they've got two tims lurking around, doing nothing felt like a shit option. he's sure dick would have gotten around to it, but jason knew it was junior who had the space for it. )

Yeah, Dick said the same thing. Neither Tims seem like the type to do a party on their own.

[And Jason largely suspects it's from the Drakes' neglect, which he hates the more he hears about them]

Were you?

( the kind of person who would, because jason knows damn well he isn't. there wasn't a point when he was a kid, he didn't have anything, and whether or not his mother was going to be. . more present was always an unknown. there were the couple years with bruce, and then he was dead.

junior can't judge, but jason gets the reaction of not liking someone else finding things unimportant when they should be even if he doesn't think they are. do as he says, not as he does. )

Maybe when I was really little I wanted to. You know why we couldn't.

[God, it's tempting to just down his glass already]

Learned early not to expect it.

I do know.

( one and a half glasses down, a good - three, four fingers worth? and jason's considering going for the bottle behind the bar again. doesn't, because that's a shit idea even if it is very, very tempting. )

We're all fucked up. Even Duke. May as well get used to it.

[Jason huffs]

Not like we got much of a choice anyway. Duke seems okay. He mentioned being an unofficial Robin before the yellow suit happened.

[reneger]

He was part of a gang of unofficial Robins. A bunch of kids trying to do good.

( jason won't get into it further than that, because it's--not his shit to tell. )

Duke was never an official Robin, but he didn't need to be. He made his own name just fine.

Yeah, I noticed. First meeting was us taking down some plants in Excelsior. Kid's definitely got some training and talent on him.

From what I got, he's the newest addition to the flock.

I helped.

( they all pitched in a hand with duke at some point or another. that's--one of the things that's different with these new kids: they've got people who aren't bruce around, they have support. teams of their own, plenty of people to pick up tips and tricks from who have been around the block. things jason had lacked during his time. )

He's got natural talent and knows how to keep his head in the game--usually. Worked the daytime shift back home.

[robintohood]

Yeah, he told me that too. Kinda weird to have a day shift guy but then again, Gotham's bullshit doesn't always happen at night.

[reneger]

Someone's gotta do it, and we all know the GCPD falls shorts.

( why not a kid in a bright yellow suit. that seems to be the gotham way. )

[Jason snorts]

To say the least. Guess it's a good thing there would be a horde of us to help out.

[reneger]

Ground's got more coverage than you're used to.

( it's crowded, but it isn't necessarily a bad thing. they've proven they're better with a team, with back up around every corner. things still go to shit on occasion, but not always. jason--lets it fit for a moment, before he opens his mouth again. )

I'd be dead again several times over without them. All of them.

[robintohood]

[Jason looks back at his glass but doesn't drink]

You really care about them, huh?

[reneger]

( they've touched on this before, but not while jason was slowly feeling his buzz coming along from the whiskey.

which just makes him that much more open. )

They're family. The family I'd wanted during all those years watching over Mom on our birthday. It ain't exactly the picture I'd had, but it's the kind of family I hadn't known I'd needed.

[robintohood]

[For a moment, Jason's mind goes back to when he was a terrified child watching over a unconscious Catherine and making sure she was still breathing. When he responds, his words come out almost like a croak]

We're a fucked-up group but... it feels good to have them too.

[reneger]

You're learning early.

( jason couldn't, when he was a fresh returnee to gotham. though he'd gotten it down.. somewhat by the time he was twenty one. it was a work in progress; following roy around the world was an adventure all on it's own. )

[Jason shrugs]

Not like my first meeting with TJ was a happy one.

[reneger]

I slit his throat.

( tipping his head to gesture at his own neck, at about the same area. jason's got his own matching scar now, which. wasn't deserved in the scenario he got it in but was karma he deserved. )

So yours was better than mine.

[robintohood]

[In a low voice]

For a moment after he told me there were more Robins, I thought about it. Maybe not slice his throat but I wanted to fight him. Beat his face in and all that shit.

[reneger]

He does have a very punchable face.

( though jason doesn't really--think of them like that anymore. he did when he was younger and angrier. not so much now. )

I get it. It was--hard, finding out about him.

[robintohood]

Not just him but just how damn many of them there are. I learned about the others the same day I learned about him.

[It still makes Jason upset if he thinks about it for too long]

We were the ones who filled in the Robin shoes second. It becoming a legacy role's not that surprising.

( jason also had time. he had time to get used to tim, and they all had to take time to get used to damian. it was an adjustment. )

[Jason turns his face to the bar and reaches for a pitcher of water to fill his glass. It's also so others can't read his lips]

We were the ones who died.

[Which he thought would put a hard stop on taking in more kids to be sidekicks]

First ones who died. Everyone's 'died' at least once by my time. Even Grayson had his turn.

( he's less subtle. keeps his face half-turned to the bar, but jason's not trying to keep this a secret. if someone wants to listen in that badly, they can figure it out. )

Which doesn't make it any better. I'm not saying it's right. But I've had years to get used to it.
