When I was a kid, I thought I'd never get out of the Bowery. ( his arms drop, one ankle crossing over the other as jason leans comfortably against the wall. ) I've been all over the globe--hell, off the globe, through the multiverse, places I'm not even gonna pretend to get 'cause why bother. An' yet every chance I get, I go right back to the trashheap I grew up in.

( it's as much a part of him as the cave is, if not moreso. and not quite the point he's getting at. jason tips his head to the side to rest it against the door frame. )

I'll follow you wherever you do wanna go. You're not going to lose me. Unintentionally, at least.

[torchbearer]

[ he falls quiet for a moment. ]

Connor and Wally are gone. It's like I blinked and they were just . . . not here anymore. And I know I signed up for that. I signed up for the . . . impermanence of it all.

[reneger]

You didn't sign up to get stuck here.

( jason didn't either. if he had the option, he'd leave. he doesn't know where he'd go, because going back home still feels like a terrible idea, but. losing people constantly is something he had grown used to, in new amsterdam. he doesn't like it, it shouldn't be something one just adjusts to. )

Losing people always hurts, regardless of how.

[torchbearer]

[ is it the hurt that bothers him? kyle isn't sure. the hurt no longer feels like a bleeding wound. it just feels like an old scar that kyle keeps picking at. ]

I don't feel lost. I don't think they are, either.

[reneger]

Uh huh. They're gone, we're stuck. Nothing we can do about it.

( even if kyle doesn't think of it as lost. jason just--thinks of it as an inevitable part of being here. nothing is permanent. nothing will stick. not even the memories. )

Sorry, about your friends.

[torchbearer]

[ kyle falls silent for a moment. ]

It's fine. They're fine.

[reneger]

Yeah.

( hopefully. there's no real answer as to what happens when people disappear from here, but jason--can't do anything about it, so he's not going to let himself get stuck searching for answers. not now. )

Anything you wanna do while we're here?

[torchbearer]

I haven't decided to be honest. I guess touristy stuff? Hit up all the places my mom and I couldn't do during the conflict.

[reneger]

Touristy stuff.

( there's an amused little lilt to his tone. jason pushes off of the wall to head out onto the balcony. )

[torchbearer]

[ kyle elbows him lightly. ]

Isn't that the whole point of a vacation?

[reneger]

( he'd take that as a challenge, because jason usually takes elbowing as one, but this time, he lets it slide. leans his weight right in against kyle's side instead so he can suffer having to hold up both of them. )

Wouldn't know. Most my trips turn into crime investigations or hunting down whatever weird shit is causing problems.

[torchbearer]

[ kyle slips an arm around him. ]

So let's just take it easy. That's the whole point, isn't it?

[reneger]

( kyle slips an arm around him, and jason takes it as his cue to lean into him harder. rests his forehead against kyle's shoulder. )

I'm working on it. ( but he's real bad at "taking it easy". )

[torchbearer]

I know. But you can do it. You won't fall apart.

[ it's worth saying. ]

[reneger]

I might.

( do you know how hard it is to go from always moving to--this? sitting still? jason's not sure if he likes it any. )

[torchbearer]

You should still give it a try.

[reneger]

I'm trying right now, aren't I?

( look at him, leaning into kyle, barely even armed in a strange city surrounded by people he doesn't know and not going out to find trouble when he's got plenty of opportunity for it. )

Even slept four hours straight last night without killing anyone.

[torchbearer]

[ kyle pats his shoulder. ]

I'm so proud.

[reneger]

( gross. which is enough of a sign to shove kyle off, so he does. hugs over, it's time for jason to go back to leaning against the wall by himself. )

You should be, 'cause if anyone was gonna get stabbed, it was you.

( kyle was closest. )

[torchbearer]

[ it was fun while it lasted. ]

Yeah, yeah, heard it all before.

's not a threat.

( even if jason does look significantly more amused than he should. )

Sometimes I wake up a little crabby.

( and he sleeps with at least three sharp pointy objects within arm's reach. just in case. )

[ dryly. ]

No way. You? You're joking.

[reneger]

It's habit.

( in a way. jason lifts his shoulders, then turns back to walk into the hotel room. )

Never know when you're gonna wake up to someone beating the living hell outta you.

[torchbearer]

And now you made it depressing.

[ but kyle follows him back. ]

( he doesn't actually have a follow up for that. it's a dog-eat-dog world, and jason learned young to never let his guard down. )
