[ he was glad it didn't take much convincing. loki is not sure why it would have been. thor seemed happy enough to see him, happy enough that loki was there. things were fine. and like he told angela, he saw no reason to unbalance that. so what if thor hadn't brought him back? so what if he moved on in the future?

deep breaths.

loki unlocks the door to his apartment. he had gotten a prime condo on the rooftop with plenty of space. there were other, more homelier houses but all the empty rooms made him feel antsy. as if there was so little in his life, so little he could fill them up with. he didn't like thinking about it.

they step in and loki whirls around, facing thor and clapping his hands together with a wide smile. ]

Here we are.

[Considering the amount of times Thor has been plucked from one end of the universe and dropped into another, you'd think he'd be better at this. Alas, it still leaves him feeling the same way. Frustrated and impotent, at the mercy of a higher power with different plans for him.

But there's a key difference. There's Loki. There's more than one Loki, even. This Loki, the one he's here with, is the one that makes it terribly difficult to begin enacting an escape plan.

It's hard to summon the gusto to hijack a ship when there's no promise he can simply return with Loki. He has little comprehension of a multiverse, and that's a stupid name for it anyway, but he's pretty sure that would break some grand law.

He's just deciding whether he cares.

And maybe if he weren't mulling that over, he'd notice that Loki is equally pensive. He knows there's a difference between the smug, mischievous dramatics and the dramatics hiding some sort of deep, underlying displeasure, but instead of calling Loki out he smiles right back at him. He looks amused, peering around the space with a feigned, effortless appreciation for them.]

It suits you. [Because it is very lovely in here.]

Is there more than one bed, or will we be reliving our childhood years?

[ he rubs his hands together, an old nervous habit loki had garnered from frigga, though some of the tension slips away. ]

I only have the one but I don't think there's much hardship in sharing.

[ a pause as he quickly adds in case thor makes it a thing. ]

I can get you a bed soon, I simply wasn't expecting anyone to move in with me.

I think there's much hardship in sharing, but I think we'll manage.

[He adds just as quickly, bumping his shoulder against Loki as he steps further into the apartment to explore.]

Did you expect you'd be alone long?

[ loki pauses. ]

I . . . wasn't sure.

[ it was still strange to do this. to call upon someone for the express purpose of . . . bonding? getting to know one another? it seems so mundane and sentimental. of course, loki is well groomed in etiquette, has done the motions of it on asgard but no one in asgard really cared save for political gain. and it was a fun game at the time.

all those games have long soured. so while this is more honest, it feels more dangerous too. still, it seems easy enough. he enjoys tea and desserts and there's no harm in inviting balthier to his apartment.

it's a nice apartment.

when the wards signal balthier's arrival, loki smooths over his clothes before opening the door with a flick of his fingers. ]

[ It's still a little strange for Balthier too, truth be told. Up until he arrived here, most social calls were either long time work contacts or steps in cons. He's finding himself surprisingly prone to mundane and sentimental, though. And this at least has the attachment of a business opportunity as well.

Though of course, he can't ignore that the last conversation they had was oddly vulnerable and kind; the fear spells had been -- a lot. But they had also bred unexpected closeness and even healing with people he cared for. And there's been a sense of resonance with Loki. Maybe that was worth chasing.

So here he is, showing up to Loki's apartment with an order of colorful macarons from a famous bakery he likes.

The door opens, seemingly of its own accord, and he steps inside. It is a nice apartment. ]

You know I think this is the first time I've called on someone instead of having them to my home. [ David doesn't count. Sorry, love. ]

[ loki hums. ]

We are here to try new things. New possibilities. Why be limited?

A purpose for being here? Alright, I'll bite.

[ It's certainly been new experience after new experience for him. ]

Have you had these before? I have not.

[ loki is a firm believer in possibility. potential. even when he's somewhat depressed. ]

Neither have I. What are they?

( open ) the library

[ loki may not have shown it much during his opening night, but he had been truly grateful to receive suggestions and ideas. in the past, he would have been too disdainful to consider them but now he considers them as he pulls out books for his research. plays, operettas, musicals. there is a large pile of books and loki goes over each page painstakingly. he wants so badly for this to work.

he needs this to work.

someone knocks over his piles of books and loki exhales softly, a deep sigh before waving his hand and setting it to rights. ]

Please be careful. Literature deserves some respect.

[ some of the books are the importance of being earnest, waiting for godot, wicked, collected works of shakespeare, edgar allan poe etc. ]

Oh, I'm sorry, excuse me.

[Beck had been turning around to look at a book that had caught his eye and misjudged the distance between the shelves and the stack. He was a thickly-set man even without his costume to get in the way. The bowlcut hairdo was definitely out of fashion but very distinctive. Today, he was wearing plainer clothing in shades of blue and green. He picks up one of the books: Poe, collection of short stories.]

The Tell Tale Heart... One of my favourites...

[He muses aloud as he holds the book out to Loki.]

Is it?

[ he takes the volume back curiously. ]

Why is that?

[He chuckles a bit wryly, self consciously looking away.]

Guess I can kind of relate.

[Dana wasn't the one who knocked over the books, but she hurries over when she sees them topple.]

I can help-

[And a wave of his hand sets them straight.]

-oh. You don't need help.

[Awkwardly:] Is that your power?

[ he blinks. ]

Yes and no. It's magic.

[ loki lifts his hand, letting a little sorcerous green magic tangle itself around his fingers. ]

Magic. I haven't seen anyone with real magic. How much can you do with it?

( open ) late night, sunset falls

[ fear. fear had touched him. worked its way through his heart and held him in its grip. thanos is gone. asgard is gone. it seemed foolish to be held in grip, beholden to the things that controlled him before. and he despises that, to be trapped by old hurts and old wounds.

so he comes out late at night, along the edges of the forest (where the monsters are) and carefully shifts his form. breathes it in. out. lets the cold graze the trunks of old trees. lets himself exist as this.

he feels like an open wound like this, bleeding it out. but that's fine. once it's bled out, it'll end and loki will become inured. there's nothing he wants more desperately than that than to become completely hardened to it all. make him steel, make his heart iron.

make him more than what he is now. ]

[They'd met like this before, when the older Loki had just arrived. Did he favor the woods or something? Loki himself didn't really like the outdoors, preferring to be inside with games and books. But at least the cold didn't bother him.

(Even if he didn't know that would be an epic pop culture reference.)

As he approaches, he shifts his own form to match, now blue and hairless with pointy ears. He hasn't taken this form once since he was reborn, though he'd argue that was due to his lack of magic. Which was a lie, of course, he didn't like looking like this either.]

I still think you got lucky.

[ he seems calmer now. less fretful, less trapped in his skin. he was still in control and it shows. ]

Judging by your appearance, the Jotun of your universe look more like Asgardians. You don't actually look like Laufey at all, aside from the blue thing, obviously.

I have read approximately 2.7 books, made progress on a personal project and meditated for the day. It has not been unpleasant nor am I unable to leave.
